WASHINGTON The House on Friday overwhelmingly rejected calls for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, a vote engineered by Republicans that was intended to fail. Democrats derided the vote as a political stunt.
"Our troops have become the enemy. We need to change direction in Iraq," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a Democratic hawk whose call a day earlier for pulling out troops sparked a nasty, personal debate over the war.
The House voted 403-3 to reject a nonbinding resolution offered by the GOP calling for the military to pull out of Iraq.
"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will not retreat," Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said as the Republican leadership pushed the issue to a vote over the protest of Democrats.

So can we expect to see Murtha introduce his own reasoned alternative in the next few days?
Dems' come-back was relatively weak. They only had a few talkingpoints on the memo:
1. Anything from 'the other side' about Murtha is a personal attack on his patriotism
2. We support the troops, but we don't support the war.
3. Uhhhhhh, anything from 'the other side' about Murtha is a personal attack on his patriotism
Yes, McKinney has been bought and paid for by the Islamofascists. I used to wonder if she was stupid, completely insane, or just an enemy of this country--then I realized that none of the above are mutually exclusive.
I think Murtha is heading toward senility, and the poobahs, the higher ups in the Dem. party asked him to do them a favor by speaking out in this way........ speaking out before he goes and forgets his name!
And, Murtha is a big time crook from my state, has been for decades.
Yep. Statements today will be interesting to hear. I'm also anxious to see if Fox News Sunday's round table blows these out of the water?
It's more involved than that. Murtha is under investigation as well.
We have to remember that Democrats serve in the military as well, and not all of them are supporting either Bush or the WOT.
Has Howard Dean made any comments on the vote? Just curious.
Everytime I see Jackson-Lee speak... I think of the Fall of Rome.
Good question. I think he has to stay very public if he really is just trying to deflect the criminal investigation, but they can't be stupid enough to think this helped them...
If he keeps popping up with more of this crap, we'll just have to keep playing whack-a-mole.
Democrats can dish it out but they can't take it back.
After calling Bush a liar and now talking about impeachment, they have no grounds to stand on for saying nobody can question their motives.
Which now means the "Democrat Rewrite History Cycle" has shrunk to less than 48 hours. Murtha made a fool of himself earlier in the week and the Dems made a fool of him last night by cutting and running in Washington leaving hapless Murtha with three yes and 6 present votes.
The Dems don't get it but the only thing that could possibly work for them in 2006 and 2008 is to support the war on terrorism wherever it must be fought.
Murtha DID seem out of his league last night. It's as though the Democrats are using him to advance their agenda, not really supporting him. And, you're right. He seems to be oblivious to what's going on.
That's right. If it follows politcal registration, there could be as much as 20%.
That's funny. I'll remember that the next time I see her. LOL
I think you are nailing it. This whole endeavor is prelude to their election efforts next year and your comment on Murtha is exactly the impression I got too.
