Spiraling College Costs (The Point)
News Central (c/o Sinclair Broadcasting) ^ | 11/07/2005 | Mark Hyman

Posted on 11/18/2005 12:28:53 PM PST by Angry Republican

Last year, college expenses rose at twice the rate of inflation, making it more difficult for middle and lower-income students to afford a four-year college degree.

The non-profit College Board reported that annual tuition and fees at a four-year public university averages $5491. It's $21,235 at a private, non-profit school. The annual bill jumps to $12,127 at a public school and $29,026 at a private college when room and board are figured in.

More than a dozen bills have been introduced in Congress this year that address college costs. The fever pitch on Capitol Hill has led to the American Association of State Colleges & Universities to promise to help control costs -- costs that are so out of control that the College Board believes that as many as one in four students rely on credit card debt to help pay for school.

What the public needs is more transparency to determine if public universities are spending the money wisely or if they are simply gouging the students.

And that's The Point.

I'm Mark Hyman.

Here in Maryland, Governor Ehrlich is catching heat for the rising tuition bills. He's said that he's working hard to control this issue.

And because of the useless political and homo-lesbo-bi-tri-upsidedown-sideways-sexual crap people are taught in colleges students are forced to find private colleges just to get an education.

Students make a rational decision that college is worth $X investment in their future.
Federal government subsidizes $Y of the tuition.
Colleges look at all the money out there and sets tuition to $X + $Y.

Teachers unions and tenure need to be eliminated for this to turn around.

Maybe if they get rid of all the PC courses and everything that goes with them, the costs will go down.

Couldn't say it any better. Cacademia is an endless hole down which taxpayer mooney flows unimpeded by any oversight.

One point about fed govt employee salaries.

My husband is a federal wildland firefighter.

He can work up to 1400 hours of overtime during a busy fire season, sleeps in the dirt (unlike CDF, who get hotels!), and gets spiked out in the woods for weeks at a time. He has a great deal of responsibility due to his qualifications, and runs the risk of being sued if there is ever a fatality or major injury when he is in charge, since this is an inherently risky business.

Those who stay do it because they love the work, and feel that they are doing a public service.

I support him 100%, even though he could easily move to a county fire agency, make about $35,000 more per year in base salary alone, work less, and make more OT while working less. (I try not to think about the county overtime rates too much!).

Please understand that there are government employees who really believe in the public service ethic.

Students are adults. Why should plumber, mechanics, landscapers, fishermen, truck drivers and such be taxed to subsidize the higher income of others?

Now this is the perfect product for outsourcing to India.

American students going to college in India? Why not - their future jobs are there.

Actually, I was trying to stir up trouble by getting people to think that education does not have bounderies. The American education system is awful...the internet will change all that. Education is just like business...it will soon be part of the marketplace (best provider...lowest cost).

Education is a life-long thing...colleges will evolve or die.

Not just India, but Eastern Europe.

When I went to college, the only professors that ACTUALLY taught me useful information were from eastern Europe. (1991-1995 - after Communism collapsed)

Of course, their probably why I'm a conservative today... Bad memories of Communism tended to make those professors rabidly anti-communist and very conservative.
