MURTHA BREAKS (Dreher, The Corner)
The Corner ^ | Nov 17 05 | Rod Dreher

Posted on 11/17/2005 4:20:47 PM PST by churchillbuff

Don't know how many of you caught Rep. John Murtha's very angry, very moving speech just now in which he called on the White House to institute an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. CNN didn't air the entire thing, but as I listened to it, I could feel the ground shift. Murtha, as you know, is not a Pelosi-style Chardonnay Democrat; he's a crusty retired career Marine who reminds me of the kinds of beer-slugging Democrats we used to have before the cultural left took over the party. Murtha, a conservative Dem who voted for the war, talked in detail about the sacrifices being borne by our soldiers and their families, and about his visits out to Walter Reed to look after the maimed, and how we've had enough, it's time to come home. He was hell on the president too.

If tough, non-effete guys like Murtha are willing to go this far, and can make the case in ways that Red America can relate to -- and listening to him talk was like listening to my dad, who's about the same age, and his hunting buddies -- then the president is in big trouble. I'm sure there's going to be an anti-Murtha pile-on in the conservative blogosphere, but from where I sit, conservatives would be fools not to take this man seriously.

Disagree with you on whether we should be there; but that argument is meaningless now.

I'm glad you understand that leaving now would be a mistake. I too don't think we should be there forever, although I hope we gain a new ally that may be beneficial down the road if the need arises.

As to us invading surrounding countries; I too believe that is not in our best interest at this time. Just as I have said we have to understand the ramifications of leaving Iraq, we should also understand the ramifications of going into surrounding countries. There may come a time when that might be necessary, but I'd rather think with a free Democratic Iraq as an ally, it may impart change in other countries by itself.

But as it stands now, leaving Iraq before Iraq can take care of itself is far from being in this countries best interests....IMHO...

Like I said, this isn't brain surgery, it is fairly obvious to anyone who understands the situation.....

"Get those guys off Okinawa NOW! Enough is enough. Pull out of the Pacific Theatre now! Harry Truman be damned!"

Amazing how quickly senility can set in. If this guy is such a Patriot why the hell is he a CommuDem. Keep in mind this moron also supports abortion, big federal spending and pork, appeasement of our enemies and his traitorous former presidential candidate, John "Fn" Kerry. Am I supposed to take some aged mental case CommuDem seriously because he was in Vietnam???? "Fn" was there too (if you didn't know.)

Yeah, let's let the terrorists win. Let's allow them to take over Iraq again, kill millions of innocent Iraqis, and use Iraq as the new safe haven for terrorists as they plan their EVENTUAL attack on our families here in America.

Bring the troops home and the next terrorist attack will begin immediately at 123 Elm Street, Every City, USA!

Murtha lobbied for Howard Dean to be the Chair of the DNC......and they call him a Conservative Democrat???? LOL! He's just another lefty that wants our country to LOSE so as to destroy Bush. The Dems want the entire country seen as weak so that Bush will lose his resolve to WIN the war........the Dems have much blood on their hands now and more to come.

Please spare me the sarcasm. I couldn't have been more clear that I disagree completely with Murtha. My point is that it is not necessary to attack him personally and his war record. The substance of his remarks are more than enough ammunition.

I am absolutely certain that Al Quaida will leave after installing a puppet sharia gov't. They will busily be boarding planes to Mexico and Canada, at least those that can't obtain student visa's.

You are really a short-sighted thinker. You probably empty the garbage and wait for your wife to put another bag in and put the can away for you.

Those will be visitor's visas since they will retain their training camps in Iraq as their home base to replace Afghanistan.

By dealing with Mao, Nixon gave credence to the McGovernite claim that WE were responsible for the Cold War and that anti-communism was a bugbear. The last statement is the essence of Kerry's testimony. We had falsely held up communism as an evil, when our real purpose was imperial exploitation of the oil resources of the South China Sea etc. That remains the subtext of the DFemocratic oppostion to Reagan's policy, inclduing oppisitin to the communists in the Caribbean, for their total infatuation with Castro. (Never mind that we now know that Castro was weilling to let Cuba be incinerated just so he could get nuclear revenge on the USA. Khrushchev, thank God, knew he was dealing with a raving fanatic. The Left in this country still arein denial of that fact.)

If the Democrats get their way in Iraq they will have successfully emasculated Americas military.

We'll have a military just like the French, hands up and in constant retreat.

Ba hum bug.

I agree. But we will have to make a decision about the Kurds pretty soon. To what extehnt do we support putting pressure on the Iranians. That could countrerbalance Iranian meddling in the South.

I will be glad to donate to the fund to send some of these spineless Freepers to Baghdad to negotiate.

SAC's motto became "Peace is Our Profession," symbolizing the intention to maintain peace through the threat of overwhelming force.

That's how this Country will maintain its superiority not by limpwristed appeasers.

Yes we do, and hopefully that decision will be made from a vantage point of strength rather than from necessity driven by weakness....

This last week has been incredibly disheartening; what I've read and seen is beyond words. Most on the left don't believe the nonsense they are spewing; they are political opportunists of the worst kind.

I can't even fathom the thought of selling out our country, our troops, for political gain, it's beyond comprehension.

I can't even imagine what are troops and Iraqi allies are thinking.....I pray they do not lose heart.....there is so much to be lost if they do....

I called Congressman (congresspansy?) Murtha's office this morning, and asked them to relay a message for me. That his comments were tantamount to treason, that he had betrayed his 37 years of service, and was a disgrace to sit in Congress, and should resign his seat today. That it was a slap in the face of the hard working men and women over there in Iraq, and that it was a shame that he felt that he had to sell his soul to the leftist extremists of his party just to betray his country. It was disgusting.

The person on the other end sounded like he was about to pop but said "Thank you for your comments and have a nice day."

Paul

You are really a short-sighted thinker.

Poppycock.
The Assyrian/Babylonian/Chaldean/Mesopotamian/Persian nomadic tribes have been cutting each other's throats since the dawn of recorded history.
Dubya could try a military occupation of Baghdad for a millenia and still never put an end to that "insurgency" crap.
Time to let the Iraqis learn to fend for themselves with the "consent of the governed."

"Whatever the motivation for his actions, it has nothing to do with securing his political future."

I certainly have no basis for challenging your contention. However, please ping me if you develop any insight into the motivation.
