Several years ago, I spent a few Thanksgivings alone. When my wife and I got married, her family rejected me and that meant a few more Thanksgivings alone.
That feeling is so engrained in me, I doubt I will forget it.
I have a heart for our military people. I know some are stationed far away from home, and many cannot get home for Thanksgiving. Since 1999, my wife and I have invited the singles from our church to our house for Thanksgiving, but I have wanted to extend that to our service people.
I don't have a lot to offer, I have room for about 5 more people. If any of you are or know of anyone in the Washington DC area that are spending Thanksgiving alone, please PM me so I can arrange to have them spend it with us.
?????
Your wife left you to go have a T-day dinner with her family???
This is really nice of you to do.
I meant the two of us. SOrry for the confusion.
Perhaps contacting Walter Reed and seeing if any of our fine men are able to leave the hospital for Thanksgiving dinner...?
MJY1288 may have a suggestion or two.
I know that some of the military bases keep lists of personnel who don't have a place to go for the holidays. Some of my friends invited a sailor from Great Lakes Naval Base a few years ago. You might want to check the bases near you to see if they have something similar.
Call your local base as well, they can refer you to the base church or base opeations that handle references for you.
I notice that you do comedy performances. There must be material for a stand-up comedy routine in there somewhere.
Your generosity will be repaid to you, some way, some day.
I know I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for the families that have invited my son to Thanksgiving dinner over the years.
Thanks to those of you who are doing this for the service members. I know from experience it makes a big difference.
Oh my, you're a sweetheart! If I lived nearby I'd drop by just to give you and wife a huge hug! (I'd help out with dinner too, I'm a pretty darn good cook!) I hope your holiday is wonderful this year! Bless you!
You can probably call the public affairs office at one of the military bases (McNair or Marine Barracks) and see if there is a sign-up for civilians to host military members for the holidays. Especially if you want to invite some of the young troops and their buddies who can't get home for the holidays over for homecooked food and football. Thanksgiving in a chow hall is second rate, even though the military tries really hard!
God blass and keep you, FRiend.
Glad you cleared that up. This thread was getting ready to go down a different path.
Speaking of comedy routines. I once took a photo of my father and my uncle Marty at a Thanksgiving dinner. It was so BIZARRE that I would have to post it because it is indescribable. Possible the strangest photo I have ever seen. Now to hunt it down.
Two is better than alone. When I married my family rejected me. Thanksgiving has never been better ;) What your doing is wonderful, Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your guests.
It was kind of cool celebrating Thanksgiving in Canada this way . . . mainly because they celebrate it in October on the day we call Columbus Day down here, and I got to celebrate "Thanksgiving #2" in November here in the U.S.!
After that build-up, you better ping me when you find it!
God Bless - my wife and I usually have about 10 - 12 people over for Thanksgiving and Christmas so they can spend the Holiday meals with a "family". It has become so regular that, despite living amongst the studs after Katrina, we are going to continue the tradition. The amount isn't so important as the friendship extended and there's something special about sharing a meal.
Patiently awaiting photo upload...
