NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A woman was stabbed to death in what police say is the first slaying in the city since Hurricane Katrina.
Police said they found the woman dead inside the home of New Orleans poet Jon Newlin, 56. Newlin had been beaten, they said, and was in critical condition at a hospital.
Friends told authorities they discovered the two Tuesday when they went to Newlin's home. Newlin hadn't shown up for a breakfast date with a friend or work at a French Quarter bookstore that day.
One or both of the victims may have known their attacker, police spokesman Juan Barnes said. The woman's name was not released.
The killing is the 205th for the city this year, compared with 225 by the same time last year, police said. The previous killing in New Orleans was on Aug. 27, two days before the hurricane struck.
So NO averaged 4-5 murders per week, but after they cleaned out the population they go 11 weeks with only a single killing?
I suppose the population is way down, but a decline in the total rate (per time, not per population) by a factor of 50 tells you something about the folks who were evacuated, and those who remain/returned.
I guess the Saints can come back now since every thing is back to normal.
If Katrina had hit Baltimore, then the "first Post Katrina murder" would've been inside a week.
Pretty soon the chicks will be flashing their breasts again on Bourbon Street.
According to MSM reports, weren't there at least 6 million post Katrina deaths, rapes, acts of cannibalism and other atrocities in New Orleans...all of course attributable to President Bush?
Thank God that all the guns were confiscated.
They're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!
So is there a prize or what?!
New Orleans is back in business...
What took so long?
I don't know... but I can bet Nagin is trembling with excitement that his voting base has started to return. *chuckle* Better there than here!
"Whatcha in for, Mac?"
"Beatin' up a poet..."
"Oh"
I didn't think a little thing like a Hurricane would stop that?
Remember the strippers were anxious to get right back to work. I mean the place was crawling with lots of military fellas and they couldn't let that opportunity to pass them by.
Didn't Ray Nagin say on TV and Oprah that he was standing in the middle of people after Katrina watching the rapes and murders?Guess he was lying AGAIN.
Cooked books. They had several HUNDRED looting-related slayings immediately after Katrina.
I hope so. I'm tired of tossing beads at rescue workers only for them to show off their hip-waders.
hahahahah
did any gov body actually release numbers on corpses which died by violent means? it is obvious there have to be a lot, even if it is just looters being shot, but I have yet to see any breakdown, leading me to believe that information may never be released.
