HANNIBAL, N.Y. (AP) — Some boys and girls in an Oswego County school district must sit in separate sections of their school buses following the arrest of two students for engaging in sexual activity on their ride home.

State police said a 14-year-old boy was charged in juvenile court with forcing a 13-year-old girl into a sexual act and a 16-year-old boy was charged with a misdemeanor count of sexual misconduct involving a 14-year-old girl.

Investigator Stephen Cadwell said the Hannibal Central Schools students were all on the same after-hours bus ride Nov. 7.

"These cases are coincidental," Cadwell said. "There was no conspiracy."

Superintendent Michael DiFabio said boys and girls now are riding separately on three after-hours bus runs, which service up to 15 students each from sports or extracurricular activities at the middle and high schools.

"Parents expect a safe environment, and this does not provide a safe environment," DiFabio said. "It's embarrassing for the district to admit things like this happened. I just apologize to the parents for having this happen."

The school and state police began an investigation after the 13-year-old girl told her mother. Both boys were awaiting court appearances.

Hannibal is 29 miles northwest of Syracuse.

At least the superintendent apologized and is separating the kids. That's more than you get in most districts.

I'm pretty sure all school buses in NY have monitors now, but I could be wrong.

What a waste of tax dollars. The very first time a child misbehaves on a bus - kick him off! Make him walk to school!

Well duh....

The reason they committed those crimes is because they rode the bus. Aw now your out on a limb.

The truth is home schooled or not, people commit crimes. Bus riding or not, people commit crimes.

And those that jump on these types of thread and playing the " you better homeschool" line are intellectually DISHONEST!

"Getting in trouble and fighting are part of growing up. We shelter too much."

Is a forced sex act (some might call it rape or sexual battery) merely "getting in trouble"? Since we apparently "shelter too much", how much less should we strive to protect kids from predators? 10% less? 50% less?

If the boys had been having sex with other boys, then everything would have been okay.

You think homeschooled kids don't get out in the world and are sheltered from popular culture ? Go do some research - homeschooled kids participate in many activities outside the house. "Homeschooled" doesn't mean "segregated" - it is simply a reflection that education is directed by the parents, not the government.

My kid takes a music lesson at a local music school, rides her horse and is a working student at a barn which has a lot of other kids all in outside schools, volunteers as a docent at the local (inner city) natural science museum, takes a chemistry class with a chemical engineering professor at a local university, speaks spanish with the migrant workers at the barn, and does 2-3 hours of academics at home. Oh yes, and she enjoys watching Fox News and Brit Hume for her news.

Do you think this indicates a withdrawal from the world ? And mine is typical of most of the homeschoolers we know.

Homeschooled kids are well aware of the garbage that exists in popular culture - some wallow in it and some don't, just like not all of the kids on the bus got in on the "action".

You really think that??? The bus gave them the ability to commit the crimes. They were unsupervised kids in a crowd. That's why homeschool (and other) parents SUPERVISE their kids.

"Did you miss the big story of the "home schooled" boy who shot his "home schooled" girlfriends parents and then kidnapped her?"

Yep, it was all over the news until it started to look like she was complicit in the ordeal. Then, poof!

I'm not sure that I would consider voluntary homosexual acts to be preferable to involuntary heterosexual acts.

If the grammer in your post is any example of the alternative to Home-Schooling, I'll stick to Home Schooling, thank you

I was being sarcastic. There are many home schooled kids that get into trouble too, supervised or not.

Yes but their parents don't provide the conduit. The public schools do. And my kids go to public school but they don't ride the bus for this reason.

I never stated that. You are reaching into your own thoughts.

Go do some research - homeschooled kids participate in many activities outside the house. "Homeschooled" doesn't mean "segregated" - it is simply a reflection that education is directed by the parents, not the government.

Research about the homeschooled killer in the news this week and get back to me.

"And my kids go to public school but they don't ride the bus for this reason."

Oh no! You are sheltering them too much! If they don't participate in a back-of-the-bus sexual assault (as victim or perp, doesn't matter which) other kids might think they are naieve!

Yeah, well, is she a freeper? If not, then all the other stuff is meaningless!
