The Democrats are so intent on unseating Republicans in Congress next year that theyre even moderating their strong pro-choice stance on abortion.
Case in point: The party has chosen Robert Casey Jr., who is pro-life, to run against Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, the third-ranking GOP member of the Senate and the Democrats chief target in the 2006 election.
Writing in The New Yorker, Peter J. Boyer reveals that New York Sen. Charles Schumer chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee told him: "When we sat down and looked at the map we said our No. 1 take-back seat would be Pennsylvania.
Schumer asked the advice of Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell, who Schumer says told him: "Theres only one guy who can beat [Santorum]. But he doesnt want to run, and you guys wouldnt want him even if he did. Hes not prochoice.
State Treasurer Casey is not only pro-life, hes linked in many Pennsylvanians minds with his father Robert P. Casey, who as governor of the state promoted and signed the Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act.
The bill placed significant limitations on abortion. A Planned Parenthood group sued the state, with Casey as the named defendant, and the Supreme Court eventually struck down most of the Acts provisions.
But Schumer backed Casey Jr. despite his pro-life stance presumably in large part because in the 2004 election he received the largest number of votes in Pennsylvanias history.
Turning the Democratic Party away from a staunch pro-choice position has not been an easy task. When Tom Roemer, a former congressman from Indiana, campaigned to become chairman of the Democratic National Committee, his platform included "tolerance of differing views on abortion, Boyer reports.
Pro-choice activists lined up behind Howard Dean and against Roemer, and Dean won out.
But even a Democrat as liberal as Hillary Clinton may be reading the handwriting on the wall when it comes to her partys unrelenting support for abortion-on-demand.
Regarding those who oppose abortion, Clinton said at a conference of Family Planning Advocates of New York State earlier this year:
"I, for one, respect those who believe with all their hearts and conscience that there are no circumstances under which any abortion should ever be available.
As NewsMax reported in October, an analysis by the Third Way, a policy group for centrist Democrats, stated that if the party wants to return to power, Democrats, "could continue to support the core of Roe v. Wade while dropping their intransigence on questions such as parental notification and partial-birth abortion.
"I'd love to be proven wrong, but my gut instinct is that casey will say what is necessary to get elected then vote almost down the line against the pro-life position."
It has been my experience that ALL politicians will say what is necessary to get elected, and then go back on that word in most cases.
Personally I'm so fed up with both parties it's not funny. They are 2 sides of the same coin with very little real difference between the 2 of them.
If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bullshit.
Of course the Rats are misrepresenting their real position. But this reminds me of the Barbara Mandrell song that said, "I was country, when country wasn't cool."
Nixon ran to the right in the primary and ran to the middle in the general election. Could it be that the Democrats are really admitting the truth: opposition to abortion is NOT an extremist view in America after all
Correction: their strong PRO-ABORTION stance on abortion.
Actually, if Casey is like his Dad, he is pro-life. The big difference is that the Democrats think they need him to win. They snubbed his Dad, for his pro-life views, when they didn't think they had any need of him.
My point is that Democrats are now co-opting positions that were once the exclusive domain of the Republican side. That the Dems are lying appears to be irrelevant. Republicans have been lying to us when they say they care about conservative causes like curbing runaway spending, putting the brakes on illegal immigration, put the hurt on Democrats and protect the lives of the unborn.
Take a good hard look at what we've got and tell me where your outrage about lying is.
The thing I hate most about this argument is that so many people fall for it.
If you don't vote against abortion, you are for it. It's simple!
That is a very dangerous path. Remember Justice Scalia said IF HE WAS A TEXAS LEGISLATOR he would vote to decriminalize Sodomy . Are you calling him a gay activist ? I agree that the lne ( I personally oppose BUT...) is almost always used insincerely but people may have those views genuinely.
I think I need a BC powder now.
Ah. There's the lie.
Let's see if I can put this as succinctly as possible:
THERE IS NO LIE THAT THE LEFT WON'T TELL IN ORDER TO REGAIN POWER.
THERE IS NO DECEPTION THEY WILL NOT PERPETRATE TO REGAIN POWER.
THERE IS NO CHEAT THEY WON'T SCAM IN ORDER TO REGAIN POWER.
THERE IS NO CRIME OF MAN OR GOD THAT THEY WON'T COMMIT IN ORDER TO REGAIN POWER.
THEY ARE LIARS, CHEATS AND THIEVES WITH NO ETHICS, SCRUPLES, MORALS OR HONOR.
If abortion was so unimportant to them, it wouldn't have been the single most important litmus test faced by conservative judicial nominees for the past 30 years, they wouldn't have butchered 50 *MILLION* babies in the womb and wouldn't have created whole INDUSTRIES dedicated to the murdering of innocent AMERICAN CITIZENS!!!!
Don't kid yourself anybody. They'll NEVER give up abortion as the driving force of their party. Along with environmental communism, discrimination (racism/sexism), AND HATING EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GRAET COUNTRY, that's the only thing that holds that party of freak-shows together. Without those four things, the whole thing would collapse of its own weight.
Godspeed
...until January 2007.
But let's look at the argument - "I am personally against abortion but I can not force my views on anybody else."
Replace the word 'abortion' with some other policy stance.
Do they get a pass?
I am personally against SLAVERY but I can not force my views on anybody else.
Maybe I just don't trust the words of politicians without visible actions to back them up.
Call me cynical.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie.Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
In the resultant mess of 100% ambivalence, the pro-lifers no longer have a clear target and defined enemy. Faced with a voting populace that doesn't seem to care too much about these things, abortion sticks around.
And it also clears the way for the soon-to-be-coming "voluntary euthaniasia" -- when the children and grandchildren of the baby boomers, taxed 1-for-1 to support their elders and raised for two generations without God or morality, decide that the new crop of legislators should allow for families to make a "family choice" about whether or not Grandma's life is worth living (and supporting with tax dollars for gargantuan entitlement programs).
I hope I'm wrong.
I won't hold my breath for them to modify their anti-gun stance.
valid point.
