Chertoff to Hannity: Removing 10~11M ILLEGALS too expensive and impractical
FoxNews Channel: Hannity & Colmes ^ | November 14, 2005 | Transcript

Posted on 11/15/2005 6:51:13 AM PST by DTogo

...HANNITY: Because you had made a controversial statement, and you seem to be backing off of it now, and it was that people that are here illegally, that they all ought to be sent back.

I'm paraphrasing.

And it seems like now you've sort of backed off that position a little bit, because there are million that we estimate that are in this country illegally.

Why wouldn't we send them back?

CHERTOFF: ...I also recognize we've got, according to some estimates, 10 to 11 million illegals already in this country working. And the cost of identifying all of those people and sending them back would be stupendous. It would be billions and billions of dollars...

HANNITY: Why — in that sense, aren't you really rewarding those that didn't respect our laws and sovereignty? In other words, OK, you're saying, you came into this country illegally.

Now that we've identified you, we're going to let you even stay longer and make money, and then you can go back in three to six years.

Why don't we say, no, you're here illegally, you didn't respect our laws, you ought to go home? Why don't we just say that?

CHERTOFF: Well, Sean, you know, it's really an issue of practicality.

I mean, as a practical matter, we've got to identify these people and pull them out of the shadows.

Now, this is not an amnesty. This is not — the president's proposal is not a path to citizenship. It's clearly temporary, and it clearly envisions people who would have to commit to go back....

I cannot wait for the Clinton-Bush Administration to end. There's just to much lying and word parsing with these immigration leftists.

"The meaning of 'is'"
"Temporary" that means endless.
"Program" that means amnesty.

Hopefully we'll someday again have an honest intelligent president with some real strength of character.

Ok, so now that you shot your mouth off why don't you tell us how we go about identifying and deporting 10 or 20 million people and what the direct and indirect costs would be. I suppose you have a plan to pay for it without raising taxes too.

You have a problem with cheap labor?? If the market requires it and there is a vacuume, guess what there will be cheap labor. Agriculture and the jobs you were discribing require low tech and high labor, guess what? If HS kids could fill the job they would but they can't so we require low wage labor. Now call me a liberal or whatever.

" Show me a person that has never done anything illegal and I show you someone with a poor memory or a damn liar."

You and GWB need to have a pow-wow together and decide which of these silly laws on our books you two feel should be enforced and which shouldn't...ok?

get back to us ASAP.

free market solutions to the problem

Yes "free trade" ends sovereignty. There are those who believe that the "markets" have more rights than citizens. You should ask yourself, if you are an American citizen, did the Constitution get written to defend individual rights or so-called corporate rights? If you buy into the very unAmerican idea that corporations have rights and that borders should be abolished so they can hire anyone they want, you are harming the rights of all Americans in this country to have a representative republic as their form of government.

A good start would be to validate all existing SS numbers that have been issued.

Just a start... there are lots more ways to find out too.

The administration is not going to do anything like removing the illegals. Some people live in this fantasy world and like to pretend that they will, but the fact is, across several branches of the Federal government, there have been all kinds of reasons (excuses) not to do so.

The sad thing is, it wouldn't cost billions, it wouldn't require going house to house and setting up Gestapo-like checkpoints on the streets, asking for IDs.

All it would take would be some serious jail time for those who hire and employ illegals. Throw them in jail (go all the way to the CEO if you have to), and I'm talking serious jail , not the country club crap, and soon the jobs will dry up.

As far as those already here - deny them benefits, deny them citizenship simply because their children were born here, and remove them and their children back to their country of origin.

Unfortunately, the politicians care too much about money and votes, and so this will never happen - they would be losing corporate contributions (people don't realize how much money certain industries contribute to our politicians, the parties, etc.) as well as the support of certain activist/liberal groups.

Stick to the issue and quit the BS - you don't advance any argument by personal attacks. Instead, you show your utter lack of argumentation skills by resorting to such posts.

Like your rewriting my words and make it appear that I said something that I didnt is not a personal attack. I never said anything about lower gas prices, free health care and guaranteed social security w/o changes in the program being illegal. That was all you setting up a red herring. WHen I called you on your lack of reading skills, you are the one that goes off the wall. Go back and read the thread. I was being saracastic of those that expect that just because someone says the American want something is no reason that they should expect to get it out of thin air.

Nice rant there amigo... but despite how much you HATE this fact...we ARE a nation of laws.

I appreciate the lesson. I want to change the laws to reflect some sense of sanity. The alternative is to invite a police state and human misery of staggering proportions...... "amigo"

Cut them off from their employers and they'll self deport. This means employer sanctions. 60% of illegal aliens will leave under their own steam. You might have to find a new landscaper. No es mi problemo

I'll betcha $5 that we will annex Mexico before a single illegal alien is deported under a comprehensive immigration bill.

I'll take that bet. Send your contribution to JimRob. You do know illegals are deported every day in this country, Don't you?

Any "Contractor" should have to report their "employees" status, and the Company contracting them should stipulate in the Contract "No ILLEGAL LABOR"! The Contractor that violates this should be fined/imprisoned/confiscated

Do you realize how prevalent fake ID's are and many of them are difficult to differentiate from the real thing. So now you are going to send some citizen to prison because the US government and the various states cant prevent forgery of valid documents?

"The alternative is to invite a police state and human misery of staggering."

No police state needed. Just enforce existing laws.

Human misery?

C'mon... trundle back over to DU, please....

I've had about enough of your pointless so called "arguments" for Amnesty.

You've failed miserably on this thread to provide any meaningful reason why we should grant illegals (Sh)amnesty...other than to parrot the useless Chertoffs "it's inconvenient" line.....I'm outta here.

Have fun.

You have a problem with cheap labor??

No...I have a problem with Illegal labor.

Do you?

If the market requires it and there is a vacuume, guess what there will be cheap labor.

I guess if the "market" required all the stuff from your house be taken and sold, that'd be OK too? Your idea of complete Laisses Faire is just modern Robber Baron-ism. The Markets should be free, but not to exploit Illegal labor to artificially drive down costs, and thus maximize profits vs the actual costs for those "cheap" laborers...like the Welfare...Hospital...Schools...avoidance of taxes...Social security Fraud...can you refute this?

It also artificially depresses the actual cost of labor...which is why High School kids don't take/get those jobs! Nothing like rigging the "Market Forces" to ensure your labor costs are low, versus the competitive nature of "I won't do that for $X, but for $X+1" labor forces. If there is no one that will DO your "underpriced labor" job, then you either close, raise the labor pay, or do it yourself. Backing Illegal Immigration and screwing the US Taxpayer for your greed and fraud is NOT an option!

Agriculture and the jobs you were discribing require low tech and high labor, guess what? If HS kids could fill the job they would but they can't so we require low wage labor. Now call me a liberal or whatever.

Hmm...so let's see...maybe if I go to Africa and just grab some folk off the street, and chain them to the trucks in the field, and only give them bread and water, and maybe 5 cents an hour....that'd be good "Market Forces", right? I would be able to lower that cost of lettuce even further! ( I just wouldn't pass on those savings to the consumer...).

By using Illegal Immigrant Labor, you simply avoided the import cost of your slaves.

Industrialization IS the solution to the Illegal Labor market...but morons like you make it cheaper to continue to exploit slave labor instead of innovating the harvesting process. Oh, in case you don't understand, look into Tomato harvesting.
