(VANITY) What is the best gun for a beginner?

Posted on 11/14/2005 12:10:39 PM PST by Minus_The_Bear

I've grown up in Oklahoma and went through Boy Scouts (am an Eagle Scout) learning to shoot various types of firearms but haven't even touched one in 5+ years. Now that I'm about to leave college I'm thinking of getting a firearm of some kinda but don't know where to start.

What should I be looking at and why?

For home defense, a Remington or Mossberg 12 guage pump shotgun. Just the sound of the action being racked in a dark house will turn any burglar into pi$$-covered jello.

Find a range that has sporting clays. Skeet flies, sporting clays fly, run, and jump.

Novices tend to out their fingers on the trigger at inappropriate times, a little too much pressure and you have an AD.

I find the absence of an external safety helps me to remember never to put my finger on the trigger until I have the target in sight. I have heard of some accidental shootings attributed to this feature, mainly among law enforcement.

Hi All-

"...Somebody's trolling on FR..."

Those are precisely my thoughts as well. All a troll has to do is launch a thread asking about firearms and he or she is certain to receive 500+ replies. The search feature on this site would give the original poster plenty of material to read if it is an honest question.

Since you're looking for a pistol, not for defense, but just for shooting fun, I'd say the Ruger .22 single action revolver with the extra .22 magnum cylinder. A versatile combo.

A Davy Crockett Nuclear Tipped Rifle would make an ideal first weapon

Hi Barney Gumble-

"...I got a SigSauer P-229 in .40 S&W. It's good for the house, but still a wee bit too big to carry, unless you have a jacket on. I am eyeing a S&W .357 for my second..."

You'll get accustomed to that fantastic SIG pistol very soon. It's not a full-sized handgun, so it can be easily concealed if desired. The good thing is that most people won't notice you're carrying a sidearm even if you taped it to your forehead. Just resist the temptation to "check" on your firearm by placing your hand on top of your concealing garment. If it's in a proper holster it won't go anywhere.

A snubnose wheelgun in .357 Magnum is a great choice because it is so versatile. Nothing is as fast as having a revolver in your hand (shoved inside a coat pocket) as you head to your car in a desolate parking lot.

Get a Ruger 22 target pistol

You can get 500 round boxes of ammo at Wal-Mart for about 10 bucks and can practice practice practice.

Most other ammo is expensive enough to prevent you from working with your weapon.....9mm, .45, etc.

Uzi.

From 10 paces you just point and click.

9 times out of 10 you hit what you were pointing at.

OK, if you want a pistol, and .22 pistol is also a good training tool (verrry low recoil).

Someone else mentioned Glocks are bad for beginners. FWIW, a glock 17 was the first firearm I ever fired, period (it's a 9mil). I liked it a lot, it felt comfortable, the recoil was not a big deal, and I hit the black pretty well at 5 or so yards. Basically, it was pretty spot on for a beginner, and it allows for rapid, aimed follow up shots (17 rounds in the mag). I don't know if the caution was due to reliability or cleaning difficulty or what.

If you want a solid American design, the 1911 is the gold standard. It can only hold around 7 rounds (1 in the chamber as well), but they're .45 cals. It was in service in the military for most of the 20th century (that good, that rugged, that reliable), and some special forces still swear by them. It has a solid reputation. I managed to fire a Chinese copy of one, and the recoil didn't seem prohibitive at all (more noticeable than 9mm).

I'm thinking of getting a firearm of some kind... To use for what?

That is my rifle,
This is my gun,
One is for shooting,
The other for fun.

The original question sounds a little open ended. Like a fishing expedition, for stupid quotes, or some that can be spun, and used later.

If you are into western styling check out the Heritage Arms 22LR/22Mag's. They are revolvers, 6" barrels, cheap, fun to shoot, fairly accurate, two cylinders, a seperate safety, and they look good. At Gunshow prices, this weapon, a handtooled leather holster, wide leather belt, and ammo can be had new for approx, $200. Slightly more if you want adjustable sights.
