A pointless ban on handguns
Chicago Tribune ^ | 11/13/5 | Steve Chapman

It's not easy to do, but gun-control advocates in San Francisco have come up with an anti-firearms measure that embarrasses even some gun-control advocates. The red-faced ones may realize this one is not likely to work even if it is upheld in court, which it almost certainly will not be. But the pointlessness of the initiative didn't stop San Franciscans from approving it by a hefty majority.

Proposition H outlaws the sale, manufacture, transfer and ownership of handguns and ammunition in the city. Unlike other cities that enacted bans but allowed residents to keep weapons they already had, San Francisco included immediate confiscation in the deal: Anyone who now has a handgun must surrender it to the police by April. The only people allowed to possess these firearms will be police, soldiers and security guards.

So what's wrong with this plan? Just about everything. Start with the fact that it appears to conflict with the state constitution, which gives the state sole jurisdiction over firearms regulation--a defect that doomed San Francisco's last handgun ban, passed in 1982.

University of California at Berkeley law professor Franklin Zimring, a staunch supporter of gun control, says the new ordinance is a "sure loser" in court. Democratic U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who as mayor signed the 1982 law, saw no point in taking a position on this one because of its obviously fatal infirmity. Current Mayor Gavin Newsom admitted the initiative is "a public opinion poll."

I say the proponents of this proposition should have to pay the court costs out of their own pocket. It is an abomination that anyone else should be made to pick up the tab on their ill-advised publicity stunt.

Let the sheeple be disarmed. Why give America-hating Lefties in San Francisco guns and ammo? Obviously they could care less about protecting themselves.

and the criminal element, who aren't all that likely to come running in to hand over their guns - especially the ones who aren't "allowed" to have them....Like:"yeah, I know, I'm a felon and I ain't supposed to have a gun, but I want to obey the laws, so here it is. Now you can lock me up for illegally possessing it before it becomes doubly illegal..."

The entire legal costs for overturning this abomination should be extracted from the coffers of the San Francisco city government (assuming the legal challenge prevails).

These fools once proclaimed in a nuclear free zone. Guess that meant that the SF Sheriff would go after you if you dropped a H Bomb on the city.

They should be punished and forced to live by this law so all the thugs in Oakland can come across the bridge and go on a crime spree.

So, they'll push for the first statewide ban on handguns. Simple, no?

It should be noted that probably 75% of Frisco's population is legally barred from owning firearms anyway, due to their crimnal past. None of this is a surprise.

If Hurricane Katrina and the debacle in New Orleans taught us anything, it taught us to keep our guns ready and our ammo well stocked.

You stupid, stupid, stupid people.

Dasher, can't you do something about your people out there? Push em into the big water or something, cause they just don't understand what it means to be an American. And obviously have never read the Constitution.

...gun-control advocates in San Francisco have come up with an anti-firearms measure ...

Why should anyone care about the foolish people in SF who want to leave themselves open to armed criminals?

Whether this law makes it passed the courts or not SF has shown itself the place to be for unarmed citizens who think that dialing 911 is the answer to criminal activity.

They'll just pass the bill to Sacramento...and they'll gleefully pass the cost on to the taxpayers. No thanks...

Add to the sillyness column: Even MUSEUMS will be banned from having any firearms in their collections.

Hey, I'm all for the ban in SF. I will know that when 'the big one' hits, I won't have to worry about them coming and shooting up my place with their looting for food and valuables.

The concern isn't with those fools. It's with the people who live there who DIDN'T vote for it that will now be criminals for doing nothing more than exercising their rights.

The idiots don't realize that they're just pushing the whole gun ownership issue underground. The black market will provide any interested citizen with all the guns they could want and then there is no govt. control at all. They can't confiscate what they don't know about.
