Newt, reloaded
By Salena Zito, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Ask any political inside-trader what's the most underperforming stock in America and the answer is: Republican. Hard to believe that a year ago elephants danced in the streets. Bush won, Daschle lost. Karl Rove was proclaimed "Political Architect of the Year" and "mandate" was the word of the day.
A year later, Republicans risk becoming irrelevant if they don't get their heads out of their flanks.
Republicans lack leaders rising in their ranks, those who generate ideas and think strategically about how to restore America's psyche. Going back to the future would be prudent.

The GOP is not losing races on core values; it's losing on leadership.
"It is time to seize the day"
This is the smartest article I've read in months. Too bad the best our "Republican" "leadership" seems to be able to do right now is consider eliminating tax cuts and argue over cutting a few piddly billion dollars here and there over the next 50 years.
Great article.
Frist just needs to read it.
The article may be smart and timely and I agree some of the original core principles have been subsumed by other things. One thing, however, I DO NOT believe is, is that Newt is the person to lead the Republican Core Belief rebirth on the national scene. He was my Congressman for many years, and the one big promise he made to us and everyone that would have really meant something, he outright dropped the ball and would not act because of his duplicity. He deserves to live in ignominity and he should stay there. I will never vote for him again for anything.
And because RINOs are turning their backs on the core values of the Reagan revolution. The ANWR drilling defeat this week, temporary or not, is typical and is a direct result of the softening of the message and the inclusion of squishy "moderates" when we need warriors.
I don't think Newt Gingrich is the right one to lead the troops into battle. A wise advisor, maybe with a playbook tucked under his arm, but not the leader. Now, Tom DeLay would stick it to the other side, in spades. We need someone like "the Hammer."
The principles are sound, but I don't believe Newt is the guy to do it, either.
The Republicans were so afraid when a Democrat won the WH in '92, that they sold their conservative souls to get GW elected. Now that they have the WH, they are finding that being a liberal is a lot more fun that being conservative. They have MUCH more money to play with, and they feel O so powerful. They bet it all on Rove and Bush, what we get is a liberal House and Senate, without them losing their majority status. IOW WE lose, they win. Now who do we support? Those that tell us they are conservatives? Those that we know hate America? Maybe they both don't hate the US, they just don't give a care.
Newt's the most unattractive and unelectable Republican on the planet.
Bob Smith will be President before Newt.
Well, that's nice.
Now if he'd only discharge into someone he was actually married to.
I think in the long run the Dems will control the US. That's because of the demographic change to non-Europeans which means a change in value system. Latino and African communities are generally more socialistic and don't place as high a value on technological excellence or world influence. They have other priorities and are going to look for a socialist government. Most Latinos and Africans vote Dem anyway. Dems know this so they just have to sit out the next 10 years and the game is theirs.
Newt: I can't wait to vote for him in the primaries
If the dems gamble on that, then they are screwed.
Latinos are also more likely to want social conservative policies then democrats and are more likely to have serious problems with gay issues, abortion, and various other social concerns.
Karl Rove also is keen on pointing out that despite african americans voting democrat, they provided Bush with his margin of victory in Ohio and several other states.
Bush also achieved the highest number of latino votes for a republican in history.
The dems ignore these groups and assume they own their votes, lock, stock and barrel.....and this hubris may be their own undoing.
Newt's the most unattractive and unelectable Republican on the planet.
