Car Torchings Rise Slightly in France as Police Fan Out in Paris to Face Feared Attacks

PARIS (AP) - The number of cars torched overnight in France climbed slightly over the previous night to 502 in a 16th night of unrest that took its heaviest toll on the French provinces, police said Saturday.

Security was boosted in the capital with some 3,000 police officers fanning out around strategic points to counter feared weekend attacks targeting Paris. Gatherings were banned from Saturday morning until Sunday morning.

"We returned to an almost normal situation in Ile de France," said national police chief Michel Gaudin, referring to the Paris region. Arson attacks were counted in 163 towns around France, he said. The count of those detained overnight stood at 206, bringing to 2,440 the number of suspects picked up in just over two weeks of unrest.

Two Molotov cocktails were tossed at a mosque Friday evening in the southern town of Carpentras, but it was not immediately clear whether the attack was linked to the unrest that has wracked the poor suburbs and small towns of France since Oct. 27. President Jacques Chirac demanded that investigators quickly find out who was behind the attack.

"The obvious solution to this is to mandate fire-proof cars."

Absolutely. And fire-proof gasoline.

"Libs + French think US freeing France is AOK, but US freeing Iraq is BAD. Are they racist?"

Of course the french government is made up of a bunch of racist snobs and they also play footsies with the islamic extremists (who suppress moderate Muslims) in underhanded business deals.

"We (the Chiraq government/liberals) report. You decide. And if we limit what we say, your decisions will go the way we want. You ignorant Peasants."

UPI Reports between 10-20% of the French Army is Muslim:

Report: Racism rife in French military

PARIS, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Ethnic immigrants face endemic racism and discrimination in the French army, a new study reports.

Published by the French Institute for International Relations in Paris, the study finds recruits from mostly Muslim backgrounds face prevailing racism and mistrust, particularly when it comes to their cultural and religious practices.

The institute largely based its report on roughly 100 interviews that took place between March and July 2004.

The report is not due out until early November, but excerpts were published in Le Monde's Friday edition.

One corporal in the French army, who gave a fake name "Hocine," recounted regular slights he received from his counterparts and senior officers over years of service. A typical slur, he said, was "Behave yourself, you're not in the housing projects anymore."

A large chunk of France's ethnic immigrants come from the country's former North African colonies. Many have failed to break away from low-income housing projects, and experts say they are often marginalized in terms of educational opportunities and jobs.

Today, these ethnic immigrants represent between 10-20 percent of French soldiers, a figure that is growing, the French Institute report notes.

23 percent would make the French think they were being taken over. 10 percent---no worries, eh ?

Even 10% whose loyalty cannot be relied upon makes the whole army unreliable

Someone reported on this page a few weeks ago that the French EM corps was 23 percent Muslim.

They may not trust their army. I wonder if a smaller percentage of the french police force is muslim.

Sort of like safer guns and safer bullets .. :0

Just out or curiousity what do you think the modus operandi is for torching a French car . . just toss some gas in a broken window? Or do you think they use the gas on site, by dropping something down the gas filler hole? IIFC this is not an easy process without some type of explosive.

Or is there an option on French cars .. in case of being a disaffected ute break glass and find ready petrol and an inciderary source.

Seriously what is the process?
