The phony-but-accurate defense is back.
Mary Mapes, producer of the notorious Rathergate story in which CBS relied on blatantly forged documents to argue that the young George W. Bush received preferential treatment in the National Guard, just completed an interview on Fox & Friends with ED Hill.
ED was grilling Mapes rather hard as to the standards of authentication that were required to go forward with such an explosive story. Mapes first gave something of a "depends what the meaning of is, is" defense. She claimed that the standard of authentication for her purposes could be lower than that of absolute proof in a legal setting.
Mapes then added: "I relied on the information, not the authentication."
Translation: yeah, the documents could have been phony, but the underlying story was true.
The old false-but-accurate defense rides again!
As an aside, IMO ED Hill could have been tougher in terms of demonstrating how blatant were the forgeries, but other than that I felt ED handled herself in a professional manner.
All warm and fuzzy. Mapes is the 'victim' here, along with Dan the Man, who though he may not have done enough to save her job, is still 'lovable', like the rest of the cbs crowd. Any watching soccer moms were supposed to be weeping in their hankies. One question. When is Mapes appearing on Oprah? That's what the Libs really want.
AAAACCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK she's using the billclinton dictionary. You know, the one who gives a variety of meanings for the word 'is'..........
You know, if I look real hard, I bet I can find the letter that JFK,The Lesser, sent to his draft board requesting a deferment to study in PARIS for a year. Since that request was denied, I bet that if I look even harder, I'll find a letter recommending him for the Naval RESERVES, where he served, even while in Paris talking to the North Vietnamese.
I suppose you don't find some of Ed's characteristics to be eerily reminiscent of that affable Eva Braun of Morning Television, Kathryn Couric, do you? I have lost a lot of respect for her so when I saw she was interviewing Mapes I immediately knew it was going to be a throwaway interview.
(The biggest problem with Hill was the agreement to come in an hour later meaning someone else has to get up for the early hour and be summarily dismissed when the Queen is ready to make her appearence. They try to make a smooth transition, but there is no way to do so. I think F&F charm used to be that the anchors and staff liked each other, that's gone now and, as a non watcher described it, it's just two dumb guys and a dumb gurl now.)
(Kilmeade, with his dumb guy persona does a great interview because he will ask anybody anything at any time. This costs the program interviews as I'm sure there are personalities who will not appear because of him. But if they only interview those who will effectively vet their interviews, then they sell out and nobody likes a sell-out.)
"I relied on my prejudices, not my professionalism."
What about fake/forged military documents? Surely, laws were broken here?
BOR has no sympathy for Mr. Blather.
ED Hill carried Kerry's water in the last election.
As to hard questions, there were none. A decent conservative would have had Mapes in tears.
The woman is a liar and a fraud and this needs to be pointed out to her on a regular basis.
The fact that she is making money because of this issue is despicable.
Finally, yes I saw the interview.
Any truth to the rumor that Mapes will be teaming up with Kitty Kelly on a new Sex, Drink and Drugs epic, "Stay Out The Bushes?"
To be honest, I must concede she does demonstrate some delusion in her behaviour. Mapes clearly believes in her own superior intellect. I think that's giving her the confidence she needs to attempt this stunt.
Hey Mary,
I have this check here made out to me for $50,000, it has all your bank account information on it and your signature.
It's fake, but the information's accurate and the signature looks authentic.
I'm just going down to the bank to cash it - ok?
All virtues to the left, as long as you hold the right beliefs.

They're more correct than they know, and ironically so. The purpose of government schooling is to prevent independent thinking.
The Prussian mind, which carried the day, held a clear idea of what centralized schooling should deliver: 1) Obedient soldiers to the army; 2) Obedient workers for mines, factories, and farms; 3) Well-subordinated civil servants, trained in their function; 4) Well-subordinated clerks for industry; 5) Citizens who thought alike on most issues; 6) National uniformity in thought, word, and deed.Schooling that encourages independent thinking centers on logic, grammar and rhetoric; the classical medieval formula.
Asked and answered in your own post! Fox is helping sell books. There might be a "follow the money" angle here.
