Pre-war CIA report questioned al Qaeda-Iraq ties

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A January 2003 CIA report raised doubts about claims that al Qaeda sent operatives to Iraq to acquire chemical and biological weapons -- dramatic assertions that were repeated weeks later by then-Secretary of State Colin Powell to the United Nations in making the case for the invasion of Iraq.
CNN on Thursday obtained a CIA document that outlined the history of the claim, which originated in 2002 with a captured al Qaeda operative who recanted two years later.
The CIA report appears to support a recently declassified document that revealed the Defense Intelligence Agency thought in February 2002 that the source, Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, was lying to interrogators.
Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, this week released the DIA report in alleging the administration cited faulty intelligence to argue for the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.
In February 2003, al-Libi, a senior military trainer for al Qaeda in Afghanistan, claimed the terrorist network "sent operatives to Iraq" to acquire weapons. His claim was reported in a CIA paper seven months later entitled, "Iraqi Support for Terrorism."
The January 2003 updated version of the report added a key point: "That the detainee was not in a position to know if any training had taken place."
The document obtained by CNN was provided recently to Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee, who have been pressing for an investigation into the ways in which the Bush administration used intelligence on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq before the war.

What do they mean faulty intel on WMD's and Iraqi ties? I think the case was proven on what was found post war... The dummies try to re-define the word stockpile but any of the below documented finds would kill thousands of US citizens if it was smuggled into the US by terrorists... hmmmmm
Found: 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium
Found: 1,500 gallons of chemical weapons
Found: Roadside bomb loaded with sarin gas
Found: 1,000 radioactive materials--ideal for radioactive dirty bombs
Found: 17 chemical warheads--some containing cyclosarin, a nerve agent five times more powerful than sarin
The article makes no sense to you or ANYONE..but then, consider the AIM of the article, and it's clear they want to be "unclear" so that ONLY the headline (Bush lied) is remembered.
Of course he wouldn't know if the training actually went forward if we wasn't on site to see it.
However, that wouldn't necessarily contradict his previous statements that Al-Queda sent operatives to Iraq to learn the secrets of WMD production from the foremost Arab practitioner, Iraq.
Yes it is true.
CNN on Thursday obtained a CIA document......
CIA will leak horribly for next few months. Negroponte is slaughtering the pigs in the CIA, and Goss is only there to keep the purge quiet, not to defend. Negroponte runs the intel show now.
Reason for restructuring intel was to clean parasites from CIA. Agency will be gutted and restructured. Parasites will be eliminated.
Bad for United States to have too much curiosity about how this takes place. These things are not very interesting. No newspapers, no Giant Senate Inquiry. Quietly.
Nice. Handled quietly, now.
DOD has problems with interrogators returning after tour of duty and making up all types of lies for money to main stream media.
DOD should be watchful for returning disloyal personnel from tours involving sensitive information.
No benefit to these faithless personnel who have renounced their American citizenship to come back to America and publish lies.
