WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2005 – Iraqi and U.S. soldiers assigned to Task Force Baghdad responded immediately to the deadly suicide-bomb attack in central Baghdad around 9:45 a.m. local time today.
Initial reports indicate 25 Iraqi citizens were killed and 14 wounded in the terrorist attack, U.S. military officials with Task Force Baghdad reported. Media reports put the death toll as high as 34 in the attack on a Baghdad restaurant frequented by Iraqi police.
Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and elements of a U.S. military police unit quickly arrived on the site to assist Iraqi police, officials said. According to a report from Iraqi police on the site, a suicide bomber walked into a restaurant and detonated an explosive device.
Elsewhere in Baghdad, Iraqi security forces and U.S. Task Force Baghdad soldiers conducted cordon-and-search operations in the eastern part of the city, detaining terror suspects and seizing contraband Nov. 9 and today.
*U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, and Iraqi forces from 1st Battalion, 2nd Commando Brigade, conducted a cordon-and-search operation in Horajeb Nov. 9. The team detained 30 suspects for further questioning.
*One day later, taking the enemy by surprise, soldiers from 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry, swooped in on a target area west of the Tigris River using four UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The soldiers searched 18 houses and caught two terror suspects with contraband, which included five AK-47 assault rifles with three magazines, one pistol and one shotgun. They also found bomb-making materials, including four doorbells with wire and one washing machine timer.
Elsewhere today, coalition air forces conducted air strikes against two large improvised explosive devices near Ramadi.
*At one location, coalition forces conducting routine operations in the area noticed two large suspicious boxes thought to be roadside bombs. Air strikes destroyed the boxes in place.
*At a nearby location, troops found a large dead animal on the side of the road. The animal had obvious bulges in its stomach and looked like it had been killed and disemboweled recently. The troops assumed this was an IED and again ordered air strikes to destroy it in place.
In other operations in Iraq, a Task Force Band of Brothers patrol detained five terrorists after witnessing two of them attempting to detonate a homemade bomb near Bayji early on the night of Nov. 9. Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, were patrolling west of Bayji when they identified two enemy personnel engaged in suspicious activity and pursued them to a local residence. Once inside, the soldiers discovered weapons and more than $6,000 in U.S. currency.
Earlier in the day, no soldiers suffered injuries in an IED attack on a coalition patrol in the same area, officials said.
