Measure I, dubbed "College Not Combat," opposes the presence of military recruiters at public high schools and colleges. However, it would not ban the armed forces from seeking enlistees at city campuses, since that would put schools at risk of losing federal funding.
Instead, Proposition I encourages city officials and university administrators to exclude recruiters and create scholarships and training programs that would reduce the military's appeal to young adults.
"We now have the moral weight of the city behind us, and it's definitely a valuable asset to have in our corner," said Bob Matthews, a College Not Combat activist, adding that the victory would help put pressure on the government to someday institute an actual ban on campus military recruiting.

The city of San Francisco has now passed a ballot measure restricting students from learning all of their options. Where is the California student and lawyer that will challenge this ballot measure in court? How dare the city use the military's ban on gays and the War in Iraq, along with their hatred of President Bush, stop a young person from ending up on the streets?
November 17 & 18, join me at the San Francisco Recruiting Office to counter protest and perhaps move on to city hall and show our support of the recruiters.

Crud, I'll be out of town.
The only fortunate thing about the measures in SF seems to be that they're unenforceable. This one can't enforce anything, the gun ban won't survive the courts. So depressing these things passed though...

Moral weight of the City???? San FAGisco?????

Wait a minute! Now I'm completely confused. Don't the leftists hate the war but support the troops?!?

What is the difference between 'the presence' and 'seeking enlistees'?

On that point, why in the world would the Army want to recruit in San Francisco? :-))
To: andie74
I guess they feel if the recruiters just stand around, nobody will notice them and decide to enlist. They are supporting welfare initiatives by depriving young people of an option that will keep them from failing to plan their lives. What's worse...die a hero for your country, or be a homeless, unemployed bum in San Francisco? Oh, I forgot...there are no bums in the city...they are just homeless....I think my therapist needs a hug!!!

It appears to me that the War on Terror needs to be fought right here within our own land, starting in San Franciscostan

Hey man! No fair picking on the homeless because you've won life's lottery! ; )
Gee, or maybe not die and actually get somewhere in life. Not everyone in military service dies...though that is what these idiots want you to believe.

I remember hearing/reading somewhere that only 15-18 percent of the military is actually in MOS's where combat is expected.
I'll have to look around and see if I can find that again.

"... adding that the victory would help put pressure on the government to someday institute an actual ban on campus military recruiting."
I don't understand what the rationale is behind such a ban. What is its basis?

Yea and most are upper white middle class !

They act like the military has no purpose, however Mayor Newsom stated on the 7th, that "there are people dieing in other countries trying to get the right to vote." Yet, he allows the intolerance to continue....FREEPers, we need to unite, Liberate Claifornia, return it to America, 'Vive la Resistance'

After decades of protesting wars, they want to stop recruiters, get the draft reinstated, then the complaint that the soldiers dieing don't want to be there will be valid. The ones voting and pushing their liberal ideas and beliefs can't join anyway. They need something to gripe about and a stand to take. Raise up...FREEP Mail me to learn more on the 17th & 18th counter protests.

Let's see how many in our military would stand up and fight for SF!!! I for one would file for Conscientious Objector Status--you know the thing they push on Objector.org...where they tell soldiers how to avoid combat duty...where these Cali based organizations push their liberal beliefs too far, and don't care about the individual...what comes around...

The fact that the "underprivileged, inner city kids and minorities" have no other option (according to the media), it is surprising that the combat jobs are held by the upper white middle class--but then again, a wealthy kid knows what we have to lose if we lose our freedoms.

Like I said in Post 18...would anyone in the military show up??? It is a declared "military free zone"--except during the much heralded Fleet Week, which generates millions in revenue for the city.
