WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS: BOYCOTT LAUNCHED
Catholic League ^ | 9 November 2005 | William Donohue

WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS:

BOYCOTT LAUNCHED

A woman who recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” received an e-mail response from Customer Service. It appears below in its exact form:

“Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than ‘christmas’ which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with ‘christmas’ red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.”

To which Catholic League president Bill Donohue says: “This statement was signed by someone called Kirby. When I read it, I thought he might be drunk. But I was wrong. We sent Kirby’s response to Wal-Mart’s headquarters only to find that Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager, Public Relations, agrees. After acknowledging that he read Kirby’s response, Fogleman said, in part, the following”:

“As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanza gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates…and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.”

Bill Donohue says: “It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday. Now here is why I am asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations that span seven religious communities to boycott Wal-Mart. Go to its website and search for Hanukkah and up come 200 items. Click on Kwanzaa and up come 77. Click on Christmas, and here’s what you get: ‘We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.’ In other words, Wal-Mart is practicing discrimination.”

Reminds me of when I was in college and had to send holiday greetings out to my fraternity alumni.

One alumni complained about it being a "christmas" greeting.

So I followed up, pointed out so said brother who was offended, and then proceeded to name every single holiday that was possible for that time frame (yes I even included Kwanza, which brought a response from an african american brother who lectured me on how he does not respect "phoney counterfeit condezending pagan wannabe holidays....praise Jesus").

When PC goes bizare and weirdly wrong.

Sidenote: The brother who complained faced immediate verbal and written harassement.

gee, I avoid Walmart simply because everything they sell is made in China and I won't fund their future war against Taiwan or the USA.

Bingo!!

I just bought some new curtain rods yesterday.....had to search but found some ....

Made in USA.

Beware of boycott emails. Remember the whole Target thing?

(in my best monotone voice):Target is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful discount store I've ever known in my life.

Click on that and you get all kinds of "Christmas". A hoax, indeed, I believe.
I would vote this is more of people obsessing for things to be offended at..

replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” is the trend now among retailers and businesses big and small. Is Wall Mart doing it? I don't know, but if you boycott them because of it then you better be willing to cut out most of your shopping, flying, hotel stays, eating out, etc.

This is just another pick on Wall Mart story.

Our church is doing the "40 days of Community" program and my wife was looking for a store where we could set up a donation table for the local food bank. When my wife spoke to the Dir. of Promotions at our Wal-Mart the Dir. said, "God sent you here because not 5 minutes ago my boss gave me a check for $200 to do as I see fit."

We will be at the Westport Rd, Louisville location on the morning of Dec. 10. See you there.

Thanks Wal-Mart.

Most likely.

Of course, we've probably offended them now by pointing this out. ;-)

Gee - I searched for "Christmas" and found 7970 items that matched. "Kwanzaa" only came up with 77. Then there is this page.

But why have to slog through the stuff about other holidays. If I say Christmas I want Christmas. Google doesn't do this.
Because Wal is an international company that serves Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, etc, not just Christians.. They are embracing everyones money during the Holidays, not just Christians..

Believe me, I'd bet even money there's some that do, even here on this board. For the most part I have neither the time nor the inclination to boycott someone for their political views, beliefs, or anything else. If their store has what will fulfill a current demand for me, I will consider that store a viable option as a purchasing point
