WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. patent office has reportedly granted a patent for an anti-gravity device -- breaking its rule to reject inventions that defy the laws of physics.
The journal Nature said patent 6,960,975 was granted Nov. 1 to Boris Volfson of Huntington, Ind., for a space vehicle propelled by a superconducting shield that alters the curvature of space-time outside the craft in a way that counteracts gravity.
One of the main theoretical arguments against anti-gravity is that it implies the availability of unlimited energy.
"If you design an anti-gravity machine, you've got a perpetual-motion machine," Robert Park of the American Physical Society told Nature.
Park said the action shows patent examiners are being duped by false science.

I believe you, doc. But one thing about this argument stumps me; namely, why would it take a small amount of energy? Maybe it could be done, but take much more energy than you could ever get out of the system? (Note I don't believe this for a second, but it seems like an obvious comeback for a person who does.)
Wasnt there a comedy (movie) that had a tree in it that did this very thing from the 60s?
If you don't believe in anti-gravity machines, Mr. Park, then how do you explain the Goodyear blimp?

I've never understood the arguments about the impossibility of anti-gravity technology. If gravity is merely an effect of warping space-time, as modern physics suggests, and if gravity is the weakest of the physical forces, then why is the concept of generating an OPPOSING field so alien to physicists? Admittedly, we don't completely understand the process by which mass warps space, but there's no reason at this point to believe that technology cannot recreate the same kind of warping. If you create a localized gravitational warp within a much larger planetary gravitational warp, all kinds of interesting things may be possible.

Hi, PF... I Googled around a little bit, but didn't find any clear explanations. I suspect it might be touted for the same reason a lot of "antigravity" devices are: someone confusing electromagnetic repulsive forces for antigravity. A rocket isn't an antigravity device, nor an elevator, nor a table top, etc.
Nobody will know until someone actually invents one. If dropping an object can generate more energy than it takes to lift it, you'll have a perpetual motion machine, but like you I don't see any reason why people should assume this to be the case. Technologically, it's far more likely that the anti-gravity machine will consume MORE energy, and that using it will be at an energy loss.
That DOESN'T mean the technology would be useless. All kinds of technologies, from spacecraft to aircraft, could make use of an all electric propulsion system based on this type of tech.
Oh, but we do have that. It's called a lever.

Yes, but does anti gravity mean "no Gavity" or just reduced gravity ? It seems to me that you could have some amount of anti gravity without any means to produce perpetual motion.
This being due to a large amount of energy being required to produce a small amount of anti-gravity.
"Big Tire" put a stop to that.

What you have to remember is, that the 3 rocket engines only have to propel 11 percent of the mass of the Top Secret TR-3B. The engines are reportedly built by Rockwell.Many sightings of triangular UFOs are not alien vehicles but the top secret TR-3B. The NSA, NRO, CIA, and USAF have been playing a shell game with aircraft nomenclature - creating the TR-3, modified to the TR-3A, the TR-3B, and the Teir 2, 3, and 4, with suffixes like Plus or Minus added on to confuse further the fact that each of these designators is a different aircraft and not the same aerospace vehicle. A TR-3B is as different from a TR-3A as a banana is from a grape. Some of these vehicles are manned and others are unmanned
