Patent issued for anti-gravity device

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. patent office has reportedly granted a patent for an anti-gravity device -- breaking its rule to reject inventions that defy the laws of physics.

The journal Nature said patent 6,960,975 was granted Nov. 1 to Boris Volfson of Huntington, Ind., for a space vehicle propelled by a superconducting shield that alters the curvature of space-time outside the craft in a way that counteracts gravity.

One of the main theoretical arguments against anti-gravity is that it implies the availability of unlimited energy.

"If you design an anti-gravity machine, you've got a perpetual-motion machine," Robert Park of the American Physical Society told Nature.

Park said the action shows patent examiners are being duped by false science.

Where are the flying cars? THEY SAID THERE WOULD BE FLYING CARS!

Camp out on any L.A. overpass after 2:00 AM Friday night 'til Saturday morning and 2:00 AM Saturday night 'til Sunday morning. I guarantee you'll see flying cars.

Any machine with the same mass as the Earth will work nicely as an anti-gravity machine (on this planet only, of course).

Well...lets stir the pot some. If you want to read about an antigravity craft already flying around, go into your search engine and type in "TR3-B". This is, allegedly, the large flying triangle that has been reported around the world. Remember the UFO sighting a number of years ago in Phoenix witnessed by hundreds if not thousands? If you recall, scores of people described a very large triangular shaped craft that was demonstrating flight characteristics that could not be performed with known technologies.

I'm not sure what to believe but there are too many people claiming to have seen flying triangles not to be somewhat curious about Uncle Sam having a few previously-unknown toys. After all, how long was the SR-71 Blackbird around before you ever saw a picture of it. The F117-A Nighthawk?

Check out the TR3-B websites. Most of them explain the science behind the craft. I'll leave it to you to decide if there is anything to their claims.

How is it perpetual motion if all you are doing is blocking the effects of gravity?

If you could block the effect of gravity, you could use it to lift a large weight with a small amount of energy, after which you could turn off the device, and capture the energy as the weight fell back down. This cycle could be repeated indefinitely, yielding inexhaustible free energy. That energy could in principle be used to power the device, hence perpetual motion.

Fortunately a patent only last 17 years. :-)

I suspect strongly that it will take a bit longer than that for anyone to even test this particular theory. Does kinda make the papent office employees look even more like idiots than they already do. If that is even possible. I'm not sure it is.

Sorry, Prior art. It has a side effect that it alters the flow of time. I invented it in 2034 and was waiting when the Patent Office opened to get patent #1 on it.

"How is it perpetual motion if all you are doing is blocking the effects of gravity?"

It depends on how much energy it takes to operate. A rope and a pulley attached to an overhead beam is an "anti-gravity" machine. You pull on the rope, raising a weight, and then let the weight fall down and exert force on an object below. But the net energy expended to raise the weight is less than what you get out of dropping it, due to friction and other losses. If the anti-gravity device could raise the weight with less energy in that you get out of dropping it, then you could easily build a perpetual motion machine.
