GOP LEADERS TO LAUNCH NEW 'LEAK' PROBE; INFO TO WASH POST 'DAMAGED NATIONAL SECURITY' Tue Nov 08 2005 11:36:31 ET
**Exclusive**
Sources tell Drudge that early this afternoon House Speaker Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Frist will announce a bicameral investigation into the leak of classified information to the WASHINGTON POST regarding the black sites where high value al Qaeda terrorists are being held and interrogated.
MORE
Said one Hill source: Talk about a leak that damaged national security! How will we ever get our allies to cooperate if they fear that their people will be targeted by al Qaeda.
According to sources, the WASHINGTON POST story by Dana Priest (Wednesday November 2), revealed highly classified information that has already done significant damage to US efforts in the War on Terror.

So, this means Senator Frist is really, really, really mad this time?
How many memos have the Dems leaked that have gotten little attention? [Remember Sen. Rockerfeller's memo? Remember?]
How many other leaks have the Dems made that have gotten little criticism? [Remember Sen. Kerry's outting of an agent a hearing last year?]
What did the Pubbies do about any of the previous ones? Nothing, nada, zilch, zero.
If the GOP leadership does anything more than grandstand and let the issue drop, I'll be surprised. I'd hedge a bet and say that one or more Pubbies would end up resigning or getting fired or being indicted before one Dem would. Because the Dems are innocent victims? No, because the Pubbies will fold before a full investigation is ever finished.

Hmmmm. Midterms are one year away. A special investigator request will come from the committee, which times the leaks from this special prosecutor's office sometime mid-summer. Libby's trial may be underway by then, with MSM emptyheads under oath in public being cross-examined by someone I know
I wouldn't 't want to face.
Should be fascinating.

Maybe. We'll see. I sure hope so, it's certainly a GOOD first start. Well overdue.
To: rhc2000
My thoughts exactly. I wonder how long they will remain in place?

This is going to be very interesting, especially with the precident of jailing reporters, that Fitzgerald set. It almost makes the political prosecution of Libby worth it, as long as he is vindicated in the end, that is.

They must definitely know who the leak came from, or have narrowed it down to several sources. It would be really embarrassing to have an investigation reveal GOP sources leaking this kind of info--though, IMHO, whoever leaked this information should be thrown in jail. This is no Plame-type B.S.--this actually does jeopardize national security.

Just growing them isn't enough. Now they have to figure out what to do with them.
I haven't been all that impressed with what they have come up with for quite a few years now that they have supposedly been the majority party.

Just a hunch, mind you, but Hassert and Frist leading the charge? They must know what the results would be or they wouldn't be sticking their necks out. Should be interesting. Ditto, Ditto. Great point. And while we are at it, the press is going to spin this as political retaliation, abuse of power, attack on the freedom of the press blah, blah, blah.
Note to McClellan, when you are asked this question just stare for a minute or two at the questioner and reply, "This is a serious issue, and WP is entitled to print anything they like in their own defense. That is of course not journalism, but self interest. No one should mistake any reporting from them on this issue to be either accurate or valid.

It won't be worth the trouble - "Scooter" Libby is already under indictment and Wilson and Plame are still managing to remain under the radar.

I don't know what to say. If the government can't plug leaks like this, then the de facto standard will be 'there is no penalty for divulging any level of classified information'.
