President Jacques Chirac declared a state of emergency Tuesday, paving the way for curfews to be imposed on riot-hit cities and towns in an extraordinary measure to halt France's worst civil unrest in decades after 12 nights of violence.

Police, meanwhile, said overnight unrest Monday-Tuesday, while still widespread and destructive, was not as violent as previous nights.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down," National Police Chief Michel Gaudin said, citing fewer attacks on public buildings and fewer direct clashes between youths and police. He said rioting was reported in 226 towns across France, compared to nearly 300 the night before.

Should I add the threads from yesterday citing that France is the one that forged the Uranium purchase docs from Nigeria???? To embarrass President Bush? And lend propaganda about liberating Iraq?

Nahhh.

He was followed by someone from the former Bush administration (not good at names) who said (paraphrased) "IF this is true, we need to be firm in our resolve to quell these incidents as they arise and without delay." No more snooze alarm, America.

"...as much as we love to ridicule the French leadership - they are not without the ability to reason - after all - this is their country this is happening to."

The French have proven to be weak, deceptive, and calculating. In the past and present.
One poster's mention of the Arab/French business ties makes more sense than anything else I've read regarding the French lack of response. The French government will respond as any socialist government will, they will do what's best for the individuals in the government, regardless of consequence.

I am very concerned that so much of our population has their heads buried in the sand.

Wake up! Wake Up! Where is our Paul Revere for today. Wake Up the barbarians are coming.

I dont understand why Chirac hasnt gotten authority from the UN to impose curfew. These unilateral steps on his part don't look good.

Right. Try and light fires or trow a molotove cocktail holding an umbrella.

Rain gear is aimed as stopping rain from falling on your head, top down. Hosing is in your face.

It's also highly undignified.

"When was the last time you saw the people of a nation state dispossessed of their culture and country?"

Hmmmm, France in WWII comes to mind.

Yup, too little, too late.

The government has given the impression that they are now at the mercy of these terrorists.

Nothing good can come out of this. They are reacting from fright, not strength and it is very obvious.

France's future is not Western.

Good post.

Ties right in with what I heard... they don't want to crack down, it would upset the (Arab/Moslim) business associates of too many wealthy Frenck.

"Chirac remained silent until this past Sunday. Now that's leadership!"

I see a noticable link between France and the very french New Orleans. Hmmmm

It isn't just France that has this problem, the riots have or are occuring in Holland, Brussels, and Berlin.

I don't see how europe can hope to contain this sort of behavior through appeasement and minimization of it's seriousness, while hoping to prevent it from reccuring in the future without being held hostage to the unrelenting and unstoppable demands of the Muslims.

THAT's what's alarming.
