State of Emergency Declared in France

President Jacques Chirac declared a state of emergency Tuesday, paving the way for curfews to be imposed on riot-hit cities and towns in an extraordinary measure to halt France's worst civil unrest in decades after 12 nights of violence.

Police, meanwhile, said overnight unrest Monday-Tuesday, while still widespread and destructive, was not as violent as previous nights.

"The intensity of this violence is on the way down," National Police Chief Michel Gaudin said, citing fewer attacks on public buildings and fewer direct clashes between youths and police. He said rioting was reported in 226 towns across France, compared to nearly 300 the night before.

Is it true, as an NPR reporter maintained last night, that one has to go searching for these riot areas (which she reported are very small and contained) and that it is, in fact, very safe in Paris?

France is at a monumental turning point. A fight for their nation now with the knowledge of a better tomorrow or an appeasement with the desire for those today to not be inconvenienced.

A really difficult choice, I understand. But we must ask the same question of ourselves in this nation because we will have to confront the barbarians on our soil sooner or later.

A fight for the now and for the future, or to give up now with no regard of the future.

We have learned enough lessons of history, now is is the time to implement what has been gained from those lessons.

I couldn't agree more.

Do not be surprised if Phase 2 will begin in the next three months: Terrorists attacks in France and all over Europe. Al Qaeda and Al Jammaa AL Islamiya (Islmaic Armed Group) will find a lot of willing terrorist recruits in the muslim communities of France..

You might be right - I honestly just don't know.

Every instinct I have says attack attack attack.

I have to beleive that there is some level of mental calculation here - as much as we love to ridicule the French leadership - they are not without the ability to reason - after all - this is their country this is happening to.

I just offer the possibility that they are calculating a no-win situation.

Did anyone hear the gentleman on John Gibson's show yesterday who reported these riots as part of a greater Ramadan showdown which began in Bali and will continue worldwide?

The Jihadists probed French defenses, and came away with valuable information on French resolve (zero), no losses, and a bunch of looted merchandise, plus whatever appeasement welfare programs the Imams will milk out of the cowards in the days and weeks to come.

Not bad for a couple weeks riot work.

---There is no doubt that France is headed towards fascism. I believe it would be known as Frankistan, with sharia law.---

When was the last time you saw the people of a nation state dispossessed of their culture and country? It's much more likely, historically, that the French majority will rise up at some point and put a violent end to this thing.

That is exactly how I see it. I think that people tend to see things as static. France has been around so long we simply assume it will continue, and it will be French. The same perception applies to Germany, England, and even to the US. The only thing constant is change. There are no "rules" that say there must be a France. The muslims know this. And the muslims are determined to change the face of the world.

I fear we aren't up to the challenge.

What do you think of just hosing down the rioters?

It's chilly enough to be uncomfortable and it show a certain lack of being impressed by these "youths"? I'd bet they'd all run home to mommy for fresh clothes

Brilliant - I enjoyed your post.

Historical perspective is always valuable - more of us should remember that "history repeats itself" over and over again.

Thanks

This is what limp-wristed socialism does to a country -- and it is exactly what the U.S. will end up with, if it puts a Marxist in the White House, and Washington is allowed to stay on its LIBERAL path.

You know, it's strange. Socialism does this to some countries, but it makes others into strong, self-confident, ultranationalist, militarist states. Meanwhile, back in the Thirties, while fascism was usually associated with this type of regime, fascist movements countries targeted for aggression were defeatist and anti-militarist (like Justin Raimondo and his fellows today).

Hey, France sold millions of dollars' worth of sensitive equipment to six separate plants in Iraq for making mustard gas and nerve agents, that gave a capacity to produce of hundreds of tons of nerve agent per year.

France's Pasteur Institute also sold strains of anthrax and botulinum to Iraq.

France also sold Iraq high-resolution optic system for Missiles.

France also sold and built for Iraq the Osirak reactor along with about 12.5 kilograms of highly-enriched uranium reactor fuel; contract valued at $37.5 million. (also supplied three tons of heavy water along with the Osirak reactor.)

France also exported a DM2.2 million chemical weapon factory to Iraq.

France supplied inertial navigation and guidance system for the Condor II intermediate-range missile for Iraq.

France manufactured and sold to Iraq two electron beam welders which were found by U.N. inspectors at nuclear weapon sites; capable of being used to develop nuclear weapons.

France supplied auxiliary facilities for Tuwaitha nuclear center, including an effluent treatment station and a laboratory hot cell useful in extracting plutonium from spent reactor fuel.

France supplied radar technology used to convert an Ilyushin-76 into an AWACS aircraft; sold $157 million worth of defense electronics equipment.

France built Saad 13, a military radar factory, on a turnkey basis. This factory manufactured high-frequency military communication equipment and radar, under license for Iraqi. It was found by U.N. inspectors to have manufactured components for equipment used in making nuclear fuel for the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission. Also manufactured high voltage DC switches such as thyrister oblique switches. NOTE: This was responsibility for the centrifuge program to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons that we have threads about!

So yes, it is a deep problem France has. One I would never be able to appreciate. It is called infectious greed. France made their bed with snakes. Those snakes are now biting.
