Worst 10 states for auto-deer collisions
Pennsylvania has the highest number of accidents, according to a survey by insurer State Farm.
November 4, 2005: 12:59 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Pennsylvania ranks first among the top ten worst states for vehicle-deer collisions, according to an insurance survey published Thursday.

Citing claim statistics, auto insurer State Farm said that drivers in Pennsylvania experienced more deer collisions than any other state between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.

State Farm estimates that 1.5 million vehicles collide with deer every year, resulting in 150 motorists deaths and $1.1 billion in vehicle damages.

With deer migrating and mating season occurring between October and December, the auto insurer says a higher number of deer are near roads this time of year.

We're number 2! We're number 2!

I'm actually shocked we aren't number one.

We're number 10! We're number 10!

I'm actually shocked we aren't number one either.

I wonder how close the stats are, I'll bet they're not too far apart.

I guess I gotta slow down since we're #1. I did start noticing dead deer practically every other mile.

So am I. Deer are extremely plenteous up north. BIL sees herds of them in the Thumb.

North Dakota would win on a per capita basis.

I once read that Pennsylvania has "more highways" than any other state in the nation. That might explain why we're # 1.

If I go a week without seeing a deer I'm surprised.

But deer do not migrate, they usualy stay within a 5 square mile area of where they are born.

We're number 1! We're number 1! (unfortunately).

Several years ago, I was driving home from work (on Interstate 80) on the first day of deer season. There was a dead deer in my lane, and I was boxed in by a semi. I had no choice but to run over it. No big deal, until I went to start my car the next day; it wouldn't start. The deer had damaged something on the underside of my car related to the ignition (can you tell I'm not a mechanic?). My mechanic told me he had to pull a whole lot of deer meat and fur from the underside of my car before he could work on it.

I have read the same thing about North Carolina. Don't know which, if either is right.

Kinda off subject, but a few years ago I was driving on I-10 (here in the California desert) around 9pm and a damned coyote bolted across all lanes and I caught him square on about license plate-high, and felt the bada-bump as he went under the car and out the back.

Good thing he wasn't leaping any higher because I was doing at least 75 and he'd likely have come over the hood and right through the windshield.

Next morning I looked under the car and saw gray fur front to rear on the undercarriage.

I think Brighton leads the state in deerhit specials. I nearly hit one twice in the last week.

Great. I'm trying to forget about this, I'm in state #7 and hit one at 45 mph on Friday 4 Nov. Took out the whole front and hood of my car, but fortunately he flipped staight up and over, landing about 100 feet behind us, rather than through the windshield.
Glad I have this to deal with now.

My late wife drove with a girlfriend down to a small town in the Virginia Mountains. As they drove along a backcountry road she stated “I hope we see a deer”. As they came around the next curve they hit a large buck. It came through the windshield with the antlers in (not actually in, but touching) the face of the driver, and the back touching Sheryl’s face. No one was seriously injured but the buck – and the car (a large old Buick) was totaled.
