Ever since September 11, 2001, I've gloomily predicted the European powder keg's about to go up. "By 2010, we'll be watching burning buildings, street riots and assassinations on the news every night," I wrote in Canada's Western Standard back in February. Silly me. The Eurabian civil war appears to have started some years ahead of my optimistic schedule. As Thursday's edition of the Guardian reported in London: "French youths fired at police and burned over 300 cars last night as towns around Paris experienced their worst night of violence in a week of urban unrest." "French youths," huh? You mean Pierre and Jacques and Marcel and Alphonse? Granted most of the "youths" are technically citizens of the French Republic, it doesn't take much time in les banlieus of Paris to discover the rioters do not think their primary identity is "French": They're young men from North Africa increasingly estranged from the broader community with each passing year and wedded ever more intensely to an assertive Muslim identity more implacable than anything likely in the Middle East. After four somnolent years, we find there really is an explosive "Arab street," but it's in Clichy-sous-Bois.

Well, that answers my question in another thread about whether any of the rioters are non-Muslim. Mark Steyn, as usual, paints a clear and uncompromising picture of the facts. The Muslim world has declared war on Europe, and so far Europe's response is to try to convince itself that that it's not really under attack.

I hope Americans are paying attention, because we're on the Muslim world-conquest list, and the invasion has already begun.

I remember visiting southern Spain and admiring the Moorish influence in the architecture of its cathedrals and palaces. I worked in tourism, and those stops were highlights on our trips.

At the end of the day...sure the cheese eating surrender monkeys in the French government have put themselves in a position for which a civil unrest about police action can be hijacked by islamic extremists determined for jihad...but do they deserve it?

No nation/people deserve what is happening in France...but the people that are causing the violence deserve justice the old fashion way...the question is...is France willing to give "war" a chance...because it's clear diplomacy failed a long time ago.

This is very frightening to me. I think too many people are complacent because it is happening "over there" but we are seeing small changes even here... just not very newsworthy to the big media. Example is what happened in Hamtramck, Michigan recently when the city counsel allowed the local Mosque (against the wishes of many, many residents) was allowed to blast their Muslim call to prayer 5 x a day (as long as they don't go past the curfew - which I think is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.)

Unlike America's Europhiles, France's Arab street correctly identified Jacques Chirac's opposition to the Iraq war for what it was: a sign of weakness.

Exactly right, Mark. Muslims only understand weakness or strength, and correctly identify desperate attempts at appeasement as the former, which of course only encourages them to ever more violent outbursts. The naive and cowardly French (and the European/American Left in general) actually believe it's possible to appease these Islamic hordes and that they can be assimilated into the "rich, vibrant, multicultural soup" by public displays of good will and healthy doses of America/Israel-bashfests. The odds of these Western fools waking up and smelling the camel dung before it's too late are slim and none.
