SAUNDERS: No clemency for 'Tookie'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/6/5 | Debra J. Saunders

Posted on 11/06/2005 7:53:33 AM PST by SmithL

THERE MUST be a guidebook in the country's death rows about how to dodge the lethal-injection needle: In Texas, you find God and plead mercy; in the Bay Area and other havens for people who think they are enlightened liberals, you find a publisher.

If you write books or poetry, all manner of journalists, authors and do-gooders will turn you into a saint who is doing some good for society. So, having been sent to San Quentin Prison's Death Row for the brutal slaying of four innocent people during two 1979 robberies, Stanley "Tookie" Williams has no shortage of champions who believe that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger should grant him clemency and spare him his scheduled Dec. 13 execution. Why, the thug-huggers point out, Tookie has even been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Or as an Agence France Presse headline announced: "U.S. judge sets December date to execute Nobel Prize nominee."

Some background on this Nobel Prize wannabe: In 1979, Williams shot in the back, twice, Albert Owens, a 26-year-old, white, 7-Eleven clerk, during a robbery. Shortly after, he robbed a motel and slaughtered three members of an immigrant family, the Yangs.

Williams' lawyers presented an alibi defense that crumbled. Physical evidence supported the prosecution. A jury found Williams guilty and a court sentenced him to death. His crimes tend to be glossed over -- as happened in "Redemption," a Fox TV movie that bought into the reformed Tookie line. The biopic told the story of Williams' jailhouse conversion, which led him to co-author a line of children's books, "Tookie Speaks Out Against Gang Violence."

As proof, supporters point to what Williams calls "The Apology," posted on a Tookie Web site. The problem is, the apology is not for killing four innocent people -- one white and three Asian...

I wonder how many other people he killed, as a founder of the crips, that he's never been accused of.

Look at the case of Wesley Cook, aka Mumia Abu-Jamal. Same apologist claptrap. There has never been a more clear-cut case of homicide, yet that piece of filth still draws breath after 20 years on Death Row.

Make friends in high places and you get a different kind of "justice" than mere peasants.

It cracks me up how the Commie Libs think that just because someone is "nominated" to receive their Nobel prize that the nominee must somehow be "special" and therefore, better than the average person. Anyone, even murdering terrorists like Yassir Arafat can be nominated for that Lefty award and sometimes they even win it.

I've recently come to be of the opinion that the level of civilization in a given country can be gauged by how many Nobel Peace Laureates they have executed.

May God have mercy on his soul...cause that's about the only way Tookie can dodge an appointment with Satan.

There can be expiation in this world for murder. The Bible allows compensation for other crimes but not for murder. Forgiveness can only come from the person whom we have offended. God can only forgive people for sins committed against Him, not sins committed between people. This reminds me of Simon Wiesenthal's famous encounter with a dying Nazi soldier and how after listening to the man in silence he turned around and walked right out of the room. I agreed with what Wiesenthal did. And here my reaction would be the same: I cannot forgive that man on others' behalf nor is it my place to do so. Stanley "Tookie" Williams must pay for his crime with his life.

He still refuses to accept responsibilty for the murders for which he was convicted.

Mike Farrell is probably here. Sharpton and Jesse can't be far off.

Tookie is so successful at "saving children" from a life of gang warfare that his own son is going time.

The books are apparently ghost-written.

He is one of the two founders of the Crips gang. His co-founder died in a gang shootout in 1979. The Bloods were started in response to the Crips gang although the Crips have rivalries among its branches. Over 400 gang members (not counting bystanders) have been killed in a twenty-year on-going feud between the "Rollin` 60 Crips" and the "Eight-Tre Gangster Crips."

Beyond the murders for which he was convicted, this man is a living domino which started a wildfire of bloodshed throughout the nation which continues today.

We seem faced with a choice between killing him and letting him go. We could actually do both. Then everyone would be happy...

He should be executed just because he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!

As there is no soul there, having mercy on it is an impossibility.

"And how do you know this? Or, are you just assuming?"
It has been revealed to me. The presence of soul is seen in human behavior; those behaving in beastly fashion do not have a soul.

Yes. Mr. Williams will die on 13 December 2005, just as the Yang family and Mr. Owens perished at his hands 25 years ago.

He deserves the same mercy he showed them. As for his books? Good. Good message. Good for society. But completely irrelevant to justice.

I'm not exactly sure what his status is currently. But he's been under a sentence of death since 1982, and I believe the sentence is still in force, although it may be under review.

In any case, it's a gross miscarriage of justice; this piece of ugh should have been fertilizer 10 times over.

Not quite: I could bet you a can of diet Coke that there would be no soul observed if he were vivisected [autopsy is too good for the turd].

I don't buy the premise. Some things exist as transcendental concepts, such as the number "8" or the ideas of goodness, justice, beauty. These are not subject to emperical observation yet must be assumed as prerequisites.

I strongly suspect that the soul is that which binds each of us to the transcendent. Otherwise we'd be machines, with no basis for self awareness. Do you agree?

At any rate, this man needs to pay his dues for what he did.
