Does anybody know why the Judge in the Libby case has scheduled the trial so late(Feburay'06)? I haven't seen anything,so I'm kind of wondering.

John Roberts can always be counted on to produce some sloppy journalism.

Actually, it's ADVICE and consent - NOT adviSe .....

Which is exactly the difference I'm complaining about. The Republicans can have effective oversight while fulfilling the wishes of the voters in achieving the GWB agenda. The only time that would not apply on a State basis is for those States that voted for the other guy. Opposing or impeding is not the same as effective oversight. I wish I could share your faith in their instincts - I find them to be too in touch with the Washington DC political crowd and out of touch with average voters.

They could try if they're stupid enough to. It still doesn't change the fact that the Executive Branch is the one to deal with the UN and whatever the liberals in congress try to do won't have any effect on our policies.

"When are the "Conservatives" going to ever wake up to the fact the media is YOUR ENEMY."

Good rant MNJohnnie. You do yoeman's work stating what should be obvious to people smart enough to find this site. My current favorite gripe is from people arguing that the Whitehouse needs a better spokesperson than Scott McClellen. You've got to be kidding me. You could put George S. Patton in front of the Whitehouse press corps and it wouldn't change a thing about people like Helen Thomas or David Gregory write about.

Does anybody know why the Judge in the Libby case has scheduled the trial so late (Feburay'06)?

... "With respect, your honor, I plead not guilty," Libby told federal Judge Reggie Walton during his 10-minute arraignment. Walton, who did not schedule a trial date, set Libby's next court appearance for Feb. 3. But lawyers warned that the case could get bogged down for months in a fight over classified documents underpinning the criminal charges. ...

... Libby's newly hired defense lawyer, Theodore Wells, promised a vigorous court battle.

"He (Libby) has declared that he intends to fight the charges in the indictment and he has declared that he wants to clear his good name and he wants a jury trial," Wells said after Libby was fingerprinted and had his picture taken by marshals at the federal courthouse. Before any trial, Libby could still try to cut a deal with special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald to plead guilty to lesser charges and cooperate in the investigation, though Wells sought to play down that possibility. ...

... Before the arraignment, Libby beefed up his defense team, bringing in Wells, who is well known for his trial work and for defending former Agriculture Secretary Michael Espy and financier Michael Milken. He also hired white collar criminal defense lawyer William Jeffress, who represented another former Cheney aide, Mary Matalin, in the leak case. ...

Before any trial, Jeffress told the judge, there "may be protracted litigation" about classified information and First Amendment issues. He did not elaborate. After the hearing, Jeffress declined to say how long a trial might take. "It's too early to say," he told reporters. "I'm not worried about anything at this point." Wells added, with a touch of irony in his voice, "Two week trial? OK." Libby waived his right to a speedy trial, and Wells called it a "complex case." He said the earliest the defense team would get clearance for classified material will be in 60 days, and then they will start to go through a "significant volume of documents." The judge said he wanted the case resolved as expeditiously as possible.

Except regarding agreement to international treaties.

And much of any administration's perceived success or failure is in the PR arena.

BRING BACK KAREN HUGHES ... PRESTO, QUICKO!! I swear, her instincts, input and presence make a huge difference.

Well, yes, I agree that the Administration will stick to its guns and I also think that the Iraqi government will want the multi-national force to stay for the time being. However, what would be the effect of the UN not acceeding to an extension of the January 31, 2006 mandate (at the urging of Bush's opponents done without publicly acknowleging what they were doing, of course). My guess is that we will hear screaming about how our presence is now illegal just to create some mischief, which would then certainly be used back here to advance the dems position on withdrawal.

Great letter, jv ... well done. He will appreciate the support, I'm sure. He must feel like he's whistling in a cave most days with the garbage he has to step over and the constant attacks on any day in the Senate. Who would want a job like this?? The impact of this despicable climate is tragic .. good people are being deterred from serving US.
