Thousand cars torched in latest French riots Sun Nov 6, 2005 12:17 PM GMT

By Elisabeth Pineau

PARIS (Reuters) - Gangs of youths torched 1,300 vehicles overnight in the 10th consecutive night of violence in Paris's poor suburbs and major French towns, despite the deployment of thousands of extra police.

Cars were burnt out in the historic centre of Paris for the first time on Saturday night. In the normally quiet Normandy town of Evreux, a shopping mall, 50 vehicles, a post office and two schools went up in flames.

Authorities have so far found no way beyond appeals and more police to address a problem with complex social, economic and racial causes.

Evreux mayor Jean-Louis Debre, a confidant of President Jacques Chirac and speaker of the lower house of parliament, told France Info radio:

"To those responsible for the violence, I want to say: Be serious ... If you want to live in a fairer, more fraternal society, this is not how to go about it."

The deaths 10 days ago of two youths apparently fleeing police ignited pent up frustrations among young men, many of them Muslims of North and black African origin, at racism, unemployment, their marginal place in French society and their treatment by the police.

"Many youths have never seen their parents work and couldn't hold down a job if they got one," said Claude Chevallier, manager of a burned-out carpet depot in the rundown Paris suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois.

But authorities now say the rolling nightly riots are being organised via the Internet and mobile phones, and have pointed the finger at drug traffickers and Islamist militants.

Overnight, 1,295 vehicles were torched across France, the highest total so far, police said. An extra 2,300 officers have been drafted in.

Seven police helicopters buzzed over the Paris region through the night, filming disturbances and directing mobile squads to incidents. Overnight, police made 349 arrests.

The number of incidents in the Paris region was similar to the night before, but in the provinces it was up sharply.

TARNISHED IMAGE

The violence has tarnished France's image abroad, forcing Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to cancel a trip to Canada, while Russia and the United States have warned their citizens to avoid Paris's troubled suburbs.

Villepin has combined a call for an end to the riots with dialogue with community leaders, youngsters and local officials, and has promised an action plan for 750 tough neighbourhoods.

"I'll make proposals as early as this week," the weekly Journal du Dimanche quoted him as saying.

But it remained unclear what could stop the violence, though some opposition parties have suggested a symbolic measure -- the resignation of Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

Accused of stoking passions by calling troublemakers "scum", Sarkozy has ignored calls to quit. A survey published on Sunday indicated his public image was holding up, even if many disapproved of his strong language.

Villepin also has ambitions to be the right wing's presidential candidate in 2007 and has tried to position himself as a much more consensual figure than Sarkozy; the effect on the crisis on his ratings is still unclear.

With no end in sight to the nights of wailing sirens, acrid smoke, stone-throwing and destruction, residents from all ethnic backgrounds are tiring of the unrest.

"My kids can't sleep at night," said a mother named Samia in Aulnay-sous-Bois. "They hear explosions, they see fires and they think they're in a war. When the slightest thing happens, they get anxious and say 'Mama, what's going on?'"

"This is why we have the second amendment. It must be passionately protected."

On topic.

IT'S SIMPLY ISLAM. All the stupid excuses come from the socialist camp.

Nov. 6, 2005 update: As Muslim youth riot, burn cars and buildings across France, and declare war on the interior minister, Nicholas Sarkozy, Muslim governments jump into the act. Yesterday, the official Libyan news agency, JANA, quoted Muammar Qaddafi expressing to Jacques Chirac in a telephone conversation his "disquiet" about the developments in France and his offer to help deal with them. No less noteworthy is Chirac's assuring Qaddafi that everything is "under control" (when it plainly is not).

The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hamid Reza Assefi, issued a statement today also expressing "disquiet" and adding more menacingly: "We hope that the French government will respect the rights of its people and respond to its demands non-violently. We will not accept the violation of human rights in this country." He added that "the French government and police should treat their minorities with respect."

" See the problem is not that they are socialist. It is that they are NOT COMMUNIST!"

You're right--there is an ugly side not just to French, but to Continental European conservatism generally. I hope only the best for France, but God bless the Anglosphere!

You sure?

Let's see. France has over 350 nuclear warheads. Should we let them fall into Islamic hands or...

I am sure...and I think you are too.

" i have to congratulate islam on sensing the weakest member of the heard and going for the kill, excellent hunting."

I don't know. They advertised their weakness, so I won't give the Islamacists credit for that.

" Are the imam's and other "muslim leaders" calling for an end to the violence? "

The violence will end, in their view, when the police lay down their weapons.

What weapons?

This is true. Who could blame Muslims for taking advantage of a weak, whining nation pleading for mercy from 10% of its population?

Go to their home country and you will find many of them doing nothing but sitting on a rock all day and they're content that way. Plus their home governments would not have let these riots finish the first night. So they come to Europe's streets of gold and think they can still sit on a rock - a socialist rock this time. Then the mullahs step in. And here we are.

I see what you are trying to make clear. But my comments were designed to show the vast gulf between the characters and ideology of the two men, Sarkozy and Chirac.

Chirac, if you read through the links I provided, is in full support of arab aspirations.

Meanwhile, Sarkozy has received a prize for his anti-Semitic stance.

WHO DO YOU THINK THE MUSLIMS WOULD LIKE TO SEE SACRIFICED AS A RESULT OF THE INSURRECTION?

Stay tuned. Paris burns while Chirac fiddles with his Cabinet...instead of calling out the military.

Well,

It took our MSM and especially the foreign media nearly ONE WEEK to finally call a spade a spade and "identify" who the culprits are; Muslims. We don’t want to sound ignorant and bigoted right? An open mind means that we must not acknowledge a threat and problem even if glaring in our face. Being fair and egalitarian means that we need to make claims such as “The religion of peace” despite Iran, Syria, AQ, Libya, Algeria, Pakistan, Chechens, Abu Saayef, attacks in Thailand, Indonesia, Iraq……….

Just as with Van Gogh, Madrid, London, foiled attacks in Germany........ The European will quickly burry this minor issue with all the other minor attacks. The European lives in denial, they want to be there, they don't want to see the truth and even are willing to sabotage those who take action against this powerful and dangerous threat as we are. The Europeans are worried about who the power brokers will be within Europe. Some still think like a colonial power from pre-WWI. More worried about internal power games these morons are ignoring a growing threat.

Even when France regains control, the truth is Europe is close to the Middle East and in modern days within range of missiles from countries like Libya, economically dependent on them for resources, has porous boarders, high Muslim populations that are growing. The Europeans have a real threat on their hands and instead of doing anything about it, two of the major powers within Europe actually in part sabotaged us in Iraq. Of course the self proclaimed “intellectual” in France and Germany can’t see the contradiction and ignorance in his position. In 2002 one could actually still hear voices within Germany stating that the Global War On Terror was a made up war by Bush! There is no threat! Now they will just ignore it.

Is Europe past the point of no return? Have all viable men been killed off in WWI and WWII? Has a decedent “lifestyle” and socialism so eaten itself into central continental Europe that they have become impotent even in the face of an adversary who “openly” states that they want them dead? Does the nihilistic, atheist socialist European really think he’s no infidel? With all their self proclaimed “intellect” they should be able to read the words of Osama Bin Laden and understand statements like "We shall kill the infidel". It’s no secret Herr Fischer, who in 2002 said “I’m not convinced” in a big media show (Fischer style- he did that years ago in German parlament wearing blue jeans). You don’t need a PhD to figure this out, OBL and many others have told you several times, over many years what they think of you and what their goals are. But the "intellectual" German and French will surly look the other way.
