The Battle Over Gay Teens

The Battle Over Gay Teens What happens when you come out as a kid? How gay youths are challenging the right--and the left

In May, David Steward, a former president of TV Guide, and his partner Pierre Friedrichs, a caterer, hosted an uncomfortably crowded cocktail party at their Manhattan apartment. It was a typical gay fund raiser--there were lemony vodka drinks with mint sprigs; there were gift bags with Calvin Klein sunglasses; Friedrichs prepared little blackened-tuna-with-mango-chutney hors d'oeuvres that were served by uniformed waiters. Billionaire philanthropist Edgar Bronfman Sr. was there; David Mixner, a gay activist and longtime friend of Bill Clinton's, was holding court with Jason Moore, director of the musical Avenue Q.

But the odd thing was that the gay (and gay-friendly) élite had gathered to raise money not for one of its established charities--the Human Rights Campaign, say, or the Democratic National Committee--but for an obscure organization that has quietly become one of the fastest-growing gay groups in the nation, the Point Foundation. Launched in 2001, Point gives lavish (often full-ride) scholarships to gay students. It is one of the few national groups conceived explicitly to help gay kids, and it is a leading example of how the gay movement is responding to the emergence this decade of hundreds of thousands of openly gay youths.

Good to see you, TAdams! I was thinking about you lately, haven't run into you on the threads I've been frequenting.

Yup, get them early, get them often. That's their strategy. "Childrens' rights". Remember Hitlery was involved in the "Childrens' Defense Fund" or some organization? Childrens' liberation? So they can divorce their parents if their parents commit the heinous crime of bringing them to church, or disciplining them?

Fair point, although reviewing the actual case would be helpful, but it will be a sad day if the race exclusion applies to any exclusion. Do you favor scholarships not being limited at all, except on academic merit, as a SCOTUS constitutional mandate? How about charity in general?

The author of the Time "article" is a homo-advocate.

It is not a legitimate news story, it is a recruiting effort and a promotion for favored homosexual causes.

If Time was still legitimate they would have put "special advertising section" over the whole article.

Time would have been just as valid in promoting child molesters as normal.

Time should be prohibited as a source material in ANY school.

You're not paying attention to how the courts qualify this. Invidious discrimination is actionable. Simple choices between options are not.

Invidious in the eyes of the robes. What do you find invidious, and what not, and why, and why and when should it be read into the Constitution? Do you find gays setting up scholarships for gays in this category? How about Baptists for Baptists? Or women for women? Or hill country NC's for hill country NC's?

I agree. They have long been discredited as a "news" source. And their photo manipulations only further discredit their accuracy.

Defund the left and demand "equal access" in public libraries and schools.

Odd, isn't it, that the left claims that people who are "bi-curious" should explore homosexuality yet they are certain that "once gay, always gay" and that there is no conversion back to monogamous heterosexuality.

The left's idea of "childrens' rights".

Think that is "extreme"? You never hear the left denigrate childrens' "reproductive" rights when it comes to getting an abortion with parental or guardian permission.

Playbook for Kids About Sex (Paperback)
by Joani Blank, Marcia Quackenbush (Illustrator)

Amazon customer review:

Children's sexuality is a part of the human experience which in today's world we mostly encounter in negative, semi-paranoid terms. This book, a veritable Playbook in all true senses of the word, is an agent of consciousness, helping to usher in the coming age of a sensuous tenderness, of an understanding of sexual pleasure without guilt, of a joyous sharing of delight without cruelty, bigotry, exploitation, discrimination; it's a "hands-on!" guide to exploration and a companion to pleasure, Humanity's birthright.
The children of the world are the ones who will actualize this birthright to a Natural sensuality in their own lives, within their own experiences as children now, and as adults in the near future. The Playbook is an aid, a guide, a friend who will help bring about a world in which it will be unknown, weird - pathological! - to deprive any person of their enjoynment of sexual pleasure, or to exploit another's needs and desires, or worse, to sexually impose one's self on another being.

Without mentioning any theory, the Playbook draws on the brilliant and insightful work of Dr. Wilhelm Reich, ("Children of the Future"; "The Sexual Revolution"). Without going into political sloganeering, the Playbook is an embodiment of straightforward Feminist perceptions of power, gender, race and sexuality. Without getting legalistic, or falling into any clinical, pseudo-scientific argumentations, the Playbook takes the victories of the Gay Rights Movement into a whole new sphere: it helps the future adult's sense of reality be formed by assuming right from the start that it's Natural to have a freedom of choice in sexual identity!

At least this article mentions the higher suicide rate of gay teens.

That's actually a canard often repeated by the pro-sodomy crowd.

The truth is that "gay" teens have higher suicide attempts...the actuall successful suicide rates are no different than the heterosexual community.

Why would gay advocacy groups have propoganda saying they have more suicide rates?

Anyway, the times I've seen statistics about higher suicide rates have come from articles revealing a number of statistics showing health and mental problems associated with homosexuality. I'm being a little lazy here not pulling up a quote, but I'm pretty sure if you search on the web site for Concerned Women of America or Focus on the Family, you'll see what I'm talking about. Oxford University also had a study showing the same.

Gay scholarships. Unbelievabe.

One wonders how the winner proves that he's "qualified." My guess is that it involves some intimate contact with the awards committee.

This is appalling, grotesque, and just plain sick.

HEY PERVERTS. STAY AWAY FROM OUR KIDS!

Well, there are old queens. It's not like homosexuality is like having Ebola.

No, it's more like being addicted to heroin. A few can live a long time on it, but not many.
