Organized gangs behind French riots?

PARIS, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has suggested organized gangs may be behind the violence sweeping Paris suburbs.

"We were struck to see in departments -- notably Seine Saint Denis -- a large organization" behind the rioting that has swept the gritty suburbs ringing the French capital, Sarkozy told reporters Friday.

"And all of this doesn't appear to us to be completely spontaneous," he added. "We're trying to work in depth on all of these subjects."

Sarkozy's remarks echo those of other experts and law enforcement officials who believe criminal gangs and possibly Islamist movements might be fueling near nightly clashes between youths and police outside Paris in recent days.

On Thursday, police reported few violent incidents -- apart from arson attacks on 600 vehicles in the region.

But immigration expert Catherine Wihtol de Wenden downplayed chances the perpetrators of the violence -- ethnic immigrant youths, many of them of Muslim-North African origin -- were being fueled by radical Islam.

"I think most of these youths aren't practicing their religion strongly," said de Wenden, research director at the Paris-based Center of Political Studies and Research, said in an interview.

"I think there is no link between Islam and violence," she added.

It seems a case could be made for Paris having a bad bout of karmic justice.

I hope you'll join the rest of us in calling for freedom for the Paristinians. And the surrender of the Left Bank for a new Paristinian homeland.

"I think there is no link between Islam and violence," she added.

The word "think" has been horribly misused in this sentence.

"There is no link between Islam and this."

There is something like 40 armed conflicts going on in the world right now.

IIRC, about 85% of them involve Muslims.

She said, "I think there is no link between Islam and violence".

She is a fool.

She would probably be at least partially right if she had said "I see no link between Islam and the current violence". From what I read the current situation is not a case of islamofascist terrorist attacks against French infidels. That will come later. Right now this is more like the race riots that have occurred here. But the undercurrent of islam is certainly present and you can bet the house that the islamofascist terror groups have a hand in encouraging this and will leap to exploit it by pushing hard to recruit members inside these French ghettos.

I think that the French authorities are stymied on how to handle this. If they take effective measures to extinguish the riots they fuel the hatred and resentment that lead young moslem men to islamofascism and terror attacks. If they stand back and let the criminal gangs and disaffected malcontents retain control of these places they leave large recruiting grounds open for the terrorists as it is from criminals and malcontents that they get virtually all their members. Their choices here are between terrorist groups exploding into action in the short run or the long run.

They could also choose to forceably deport several million people but the problems with this approach are huge. First they would have to actually round up all these people. Then they would have to find somewhere to send them. There is no guarantee that Mali, Morocco, Algeria, etc. would allow these people to come back. The French might have to use force (or a credible threat of force) to get other nations to take these people in. Even if the French authorities could be certain that millions of deportations would be accepted by other nations it is unlikely that these millions would go quietly. It it is quite likely that major police and probably military action would be needed to remove them all. An attempt to deport all these people could easily result in insurrection on a very dangerous scale.

The Europeans have left themselves wide open to this. Their short-sighted foolishness could very easily result in a conflict of immense proportions. I see no easy way out of their predicament.

I agree with you completely. I think France should concede Paris and all of its surrounding suburbs to the paristinians as a gesture of good will.

You missed the part where Muslims made sure Muslim women and girls got little or no education and were raised to know their place...behind the family goat.

Oh yes...and the French social office sits there shaking their head when they get called out to a house where the Muslim father is beating the 13-year old Muslim daughter for failing to wear the proper clothing.

What is amazing here is that you can basically take a Thai or Chinese family...or even Indian family...and they make a great attempt to integrate into society...both in the US and Europe. There is a proud heritage and great emphasis on education. Muslims don't project a proud heritage, nor would they ever care if their son became a lawyer or doctor. Its different with Lebanese families...who have a great emphasis on being good neighbors and just honesty don't care about being a Muslim. People ought to look at Beirut as a good example of a middle-eastern society that thrives.

Liberal country problem = "French authorities are stymied on how to handle this. Conservative country solution = Just start shooting the ba$tards.

Chinese assimilation varies. In Vancouver, there is a large enough community where they do not integrate into the larger society. Same goes for Southern California.

By the second and third generation, they do.

But did she say "Je ne crois pas qu'il y a un lien entre l'Islam et la violence"?

That is almost certainly what she said.

Which is, indeed, "I don't think there is a link between Islam and violence."

But it is also "I don't think there is a link between Islam and the violence."

If she meant the former, she would be a loon.
If she meant the latter, which is what I took her to meaning, she was referring to the immediate events in France, and I agree with her assessment.

have I missed anything

You are halfway there. Fukayama had an editorial (I don't have the link) that finished the job. He suggested that these Muslims had lost contact with the structure of their homelands. They were seeking roots and were finding them with a multinational militaristic Muslim ideology. They were the perfect candidates for suicide bombings since their new countries had nothing to offer them. He also explained how cell phones and the Internet made communication possible among these groups spread out throughout Europe.
