Riots spread beyond French capital (Marseilles, Dijon and Normandy)

A WEEK of suburban violence in France showed no sign of abating today after an eighth night of clashes and car-burning which for the first time spread beyond the capital.

Police reported a total of 400 vehicles set alight by rioters, mostly in the poor neighbourhoods of the Paris outskirts where night-time confrontations with police have raged since October 27, but some also in Dijon, eastern France, Marseille to the south and Normandy in the north. Arsonists set fire to five businesses in the Seine-Saint-Denis district north and east of Paris city centre, completely destroying a large warehouse containing carpets and flooring material at the Garonord industrial zone near Charles de Gaulle airport.

At Trappes, to the southwest of Paris, a spectacular fire gutted a bus depot, with 27 vehicles inside destroyed. Witnesses told Europe 1 radio that flames shot 50 metres into the air with repeated explosions.

Five officers were slightly hurt by flying objects as rioters once again stoned police and fire services in several neighbourhoods, and at Neuilly-sur-Marne to the east of Paris buckshot was fired at vans belonging to the CRS riot squad.

Police said that though the number of car-burnings was higher than the previous night, clashes with rioters were fewer.

Advertisement: The rioting, which began after the accidental deaths of two youths hiding in an electrical sub-station at Clichy-sous-Bois to escape a police identity check, is the worst France has seen since the first troubles broke out in deprived, high-immigration neighbourhoods in the late 1980s. Those responsible are mainly groups of young Muslim men who have said in interviews that they are protesting against economic misery, racial discrimination and provocative policing.

Small-scale suburban violence is a regular but little reported fact of life in many poor areas on the outskirts of major French cities. According to the police intelligence service RG a total of 28,000 cars have been burned across the country this year – even before the latest outbreak.

What sets the current spate apart is its duration, and the way it has spread well beyond the original flashpoint.

The violence has badly rattled the government of President Jacques Chirac, which is wavering between the "zero tolerance" policies of the hardline Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and calls for a more conciliatory approach to take account of the rioters' grievances.

Speaking on French television on Thursday evening, Mr Sarkozy said that the violence was being orchestrated by unknown organisers. "What we have been witnessing ... has nothing spontaneous about it. It was perfectly organised. We are trying to find out by who and how," he said.

The minister – who has ambitions to become president at elections in 2007 – also rebutted charges that he provoked the riots with his outspoken language. He has described those responsible as "racaille", or rabble, and said crime-ridden areas need to be "cleaned with a power-hose".

"What is extraordinary is the way people are more worried about words than the reality on the ground," he said.

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who has promised an "action plan" for deprived suburban areas by the end of the month, held talks with local politicians on Thursday evening and afterwards promised to "initiate a dialogue in order to find the correct solutions, to give everyone his place."

But mayors from both left and right said that quick-fix ideas would have little impact.

"Now is not the time for grandstanding, for yet more action plans. It is time to bring out neighbourhoods back inside the rule of law," said Jean-Christophe Lagarde, centre-right mayor of Drancy.

"We need a return to order but also some rapid messages of hope in the direction of those who are suffering. What we don't need is more small scale temporary solutions, not an nth plan for the banlieues (suburbs)," said the Socialist mayor of Evry Manuel Valls.

This article provides some good context on why this is happening, seems the French and Arab league made agreements long ago that these people would never be assimilated

We have joked about this in this forum. Now it seems the funny part may be over and France may be teetering on Civil War. What would posses the authorities to let this get so out of control? When will they learn that appeasement wont work? They have to regain control of the situation quickly. Meanwhile, the rest of Europe watches closely. The Dutch have it right, get rid of this vermin and do it soon!

Normandy? Expect monuments to Christian imperialism to be defaced soon.

We should start contingency plans to bring our soldiers home now. To include sending in Marines to hold the ground while Graves Registration does their work.

Are they all this blind?

Can't they see that their globalism, multicultural society, and way of life are crashing down on them?

The "deer frozen in the headlights" scenario just makes me sad.

Are they all this blind?

They were blind in the 1930's, why should anybody assume their vision has cleared since then?

This poverty is the fault explanation is a load of garbage.

So our parents or grandparents who grew up during the depression had the wrong ideas. Instead of educating themselves and bettering their conditions, they should have just burnt cars in the streets and rioted.

The French will never learn that.

I remember reading that we own that land in Normandy. Is that so?

What's a Leftist to do?

After all, given the success of abortion, and the wonderful entitlement society the leftist swine have erected, it's not like they can get rid of the Muslim vermin.

No. They need them.

Chirac & Villepin will offer the wives and daughters of Frenchmen before taking the offensive. I sit in wonderment... watching them drown in their own self-guilt.

They have also taken on an increasingly dangerous tone, with buckshot fired at riot squad vans -- and prosecutors revealing that a handicapped woman was deliberately set on fire the night before.
According to prosecutors Friday, the 56-year-old woman was unable to get off a bus targeted by a Molotov cocktail late Wednesday in the northern Paris suburb of Sevran. She was allegedly doused with petrol by one youth, then others threw a flaming rag on her. Rescued by the driver, she was taken to hospital with severe burns to 20 percent of her body. (AFP)
