Hawaiian skull taken by California man returned to the islands

HONOLULU A 200-year-old Hawaiian skull found on Maui decades ago and later advertised on eBay was returned to the islands this week.

The skull of a Native Hawaiian warrior was taken from a construction site on Kaanapali in 1969 by a California teenager, who then tried to sell it on the Internet.

Jerry Hasson of Huntington Beach, now in his 50s, said he had sneaked onto the beach with friends and found an entire skeleton _ but took only the skull.

An undercover agent with the U-S Bureau of Indian Affairs contacted Hasson and bought the skull for 25-hundred dollars.

Hasson pleaded guilty in May to a federal charge of interstate commerce with illegally unearthed archaeological items.

I'm sorry again. I don't import skulls personally. I ran across this site, when I had the strange opportunity to see a skull in a stump deep in the forest, with some colorful stones in it. The coroner was called and took possession of the skull.

I don't mind this moron spending some time in prison for desicrating a grave. I think he is a ghoul and I would feel no different if he desicrated a grave in my town or yours. But he would not. He violated a federal rule on artifacts. If he dug up a grave in my town, he would not be looking at serious time.

But we allow people to buy skulls in this country. We allow East India and Pakistan to sell them here.

I'm sorry you don't want to wish me a merry Christmas. Rest assured, I will wish you one.

Merry Christmas!

DK

I have some cupralite, I hope the feds aren't after me!

Just don't put it on Ebay. It appears the feds employ large amount of surfers in order to find dinosaur dung and CIA leaks. :)

I need to hide it immediately. Maybe in the indoor rock/water fountain.

"The skull of a Native Hawaiian warrior was taken from a construction site on Kaanapali in 1969 by a California teenager, who then tried to sell it on the Internet."

Wow, must have been tough trying to sell it on the Internet in 1969! (joke)

In Hawaii, there are numerous things from centuries past that aren't tremendously funny. This whole episode gives me the creeps. UGH!

"200 year old skull of a Hawaiian warrior"
That would be circa 1800, about twenty years after HMS Discovery and near the time when Kamehameha captured the American ship Fair American.
There are no supporting data that the skull was that of a Hawaiian warrior.
If it's from one of the casualties of Fair American, I suppose it could be deemed Kamaaina.

I've got two skulls in my house; one is a resin one I bought maybe ten years ago at WalMart, around Halloween. It was made in China, so I shouldn't have to worry about returning it.

The other one, I was born with. ;')
