U.S. Sauerkraut Sales Soar on Reports it Could Cure Avian Flu; Cure in a Can Sends Americans on a Sauerkraut Buying Spree, According to The Fremont Company 11/3/2005 12:05:00 PM EST

Sauerkraut sales are going through the roof, with some Midwest stores reporting an 850% spike just last week on a recent report that scientists at Seoul National University successfully used Kimchi Sauerkraut to treat chickens infected with Avian Flu. Both Kimchi and traditional Sauerkraut are made by fermenting sliced cabbage, producing a high level of lactic acid, which may be the critical element in preventing Avian Flu.

"We saw our sales climb immediately as this news hit," says Chris Smith, VP of marketing for Frank's Sauerkraut, one of the United States' leading brands of Sauerkraut. "Men's Health Magazine also advised constructing a pandemic kit containing sauerkraut because of its lactic acid bacteria. People are stocking up on sauerkraut like bottled water before a hurricane hits. We hope to be able to keep up with the demand this season," he adds.

Sales of Frank's brand sauerkraut were up an average of 77% (over the same period in 2004) in a survey of sales of 54 Midwest food retailers during week 39 of 2005. "This is an incredible indicator that the American public is taking preventative steps to insulate themselves from this potential pandemic in advance," says Chris Smith. "With nine of the stores reporting an increase in sales of over 150% and one store even reporting an 850% increase what we're seeing is a radical shift from our traditional approach to treating health issues: waiting until we're sick," he adds.

CBS Television WCCO in Minneapolis reported on October 23, 2005 that "When Patricia Oxendale heard about the study, she rushed to her neighborhood grocery store to buy some sauerkraut. 'That's what I just saw on TV so I thought, 'I'm going to take some home,' because I love it -- usually on Reuben sandwiches,' Oxendale said. Others at the store bought the sour cabbage just because they like it."

According to the November 2nd 2005 Chicago Sun-Times, "President Bush on Tuesday outlined a $7.1 billion strategy to get ready for the next pandemic...and the details released Wednesday stress that early on, the public will be depending on scarce supplies of anti-flu drugs and stockpiled vaccines and old-fashioned ways of limiting viral spread." "News like this sends a message to the American public that they had better be ready to use every means available to prevent the spread of this flu because they can't count on the government. Sauerkraut holds out promise to prevent, if not cure Avian Flu. They've been eating piles of the Kimchi variety in Asia and, coincidentally, also had the lowest number of SARS cases in that area." says Chris Smith.

You just never forget the look on a child's face when they bite into that scrumptious candied onion at the Halloween carnival.

Sauerkraut only improves one thing:

Polish Sausage with Sauerkraut

Preheat oven to 300°F. Place bacon, onion and carrot in heavy large ovenproof Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sauté until onion is tender but not brown, about 5 minutes. Squeeze as much liquid as possible from sauerkraut. Add sauerkraut to Dutch oven. Add wine, stock, caraway seeds and juniper berries. Bring to simmer. Cover tightly, place in oven and bake 1 hour. Add kielbasa to Dutch oven, pushing into sauerkraut. Cover and bake 1 hour. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring frequently.) Serves 4

Cabbage, n., A familiar kitchen-garden vegetable about as large and wise as a man's head. -- Ambrose Bierce

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It must be the "Kraut" in me -- I'm about 25% Bavarian -- but I love cabbage in all forms. It seems to have a particular affinity to pork: slaw with Carolina BBQ, kraut with brats, braised cabbage with a pork loin, or even Brussels Sprouts, first blanched, then browned in bacon drippings.
Kraut as a Bird Flu palliative is absurd on its face. Still, it doesn't hurt to take precautions. So, a little pork, a little cabbage, and what goes with that? Oh, yeah ... beer. I'll undertake a little research as to the benefits of such a regimen, and get back to ya'll.
Foolish actions of those who really should never breed.
That's not PC. Foolish people add diversity to our society. Plus, they are easy marks. :-)
The founder of the Gallo Salami company died recently in San Francisco. (Not of the Thunderbird "wine" Gallo family.) I forget his name and other details, but some time ago, 20 years maybe, he sold the company to some big food concern. Immediately, the big food concern changed his formula to make the salami less spicy, to broaden its appeal to the bland tastes of the American public. He didn't appreciate the change, but what could he do.
This brings to mind this marketing gimmick (is there a an American Sauerkraut Association based, where else, on K Street in DC?) to promote sauerkraut as an American version of kimchi, an absurd idea on the face of it, since no one would dare to mass market the real thang.
Actually, I love saurkraut.
But that other stuff....
To each his own, I guess. Some people rave over lamb. Hell, not even my DOG will eat lamb!!
But for those who haven't heard, it has been known for a long time that cabbage in any form is very, very good for the digestive system.
[Kimchi is] not just belly burning. It's why you need a popsicle in the bathroom. And not for eating.
I don't understand. Please be more graphic. Use a diagram if necessary. ;O)
Is the kraut and taters a polish thing? I never had it with potatoes until I met my wife who's Polish and it appears that lots of Polish families have it that way.
I would assume so. I know it's a Bavarian thing. My late grandmother insisted on sauerkraut with homemade mashed potatoes at all holiday dinners -- the sole deviation from our otherwise standard Southern repasts. And an excellent combination it is.
Well, I guess this is as good a place as any to post this article:
http://www.tothepointnews.com/content/view/1983/44/
The author is taking supplements of BHT, an FDA approved food preservative to ward off the flu. See, junk food IS good for you!!!
"BHT also dissolves the lipid protective coating around certain viruses, such as all herpes and papilloma viruses. Without the coating, the virus disintegrates (1). There is reason to believe that BHT may do the same to the H5N1 virus as well."
