U.S. Sauerkraut Sales Soar on Reports it Could Cure Avian Flu; Cure in a Can Sends Americans on a Sauerkraut Buying Spree, According to The Fremont Company 11/3/2005 12:05:00 PM EST

Sauerkraut sales are going through the roof, with some Midwest stores reporting an 850% spike just last week on a recent report that scientists at Seoul National University successfully used Kimchi Sauerkraut to treat chickens infected with Avian Flu. Both Kimchi and traditional Sauerkraut are made by fermenting sliced cabbage, producing a high level of lactic acid, which may be the critical element in preventing Avian Flu.

"We saw our sales climb immediately as this news hit," says Chris Smith, VP of marketing for Frank's Sauerkraut, one of the United States' leading brands of Sauerkraut. "Men's Health Magazine also advised constructing a pandemic kit containing sauerkraut because of its lactic acid bacteria. People are stocking up on sauerkraut like bottled water before a hurricane hits. We hope to be able to keep up with the demand this season," he adds.

Sales of Frank's brand sauerkraut were up an average of 77% (over the same period in 2004) in a survey of sales of 54 Midwest food retailers during week 39 of 2005. "This is an incredible indicator that the American public is taking preventative steps to insulate themselves from this potential pandemic in advance," says Chris Smith. "With nine of the stores reporting an increase in sales of over 150% and one store even reporting an 850% increase what we're seeing is a radical shift from our traditional approach to treating health issues: waiting until we're sick," he adds.

CBS Television WCCO in Minneapolis reported on October 23, 2005 that "When Patricia Oxendale heard about the study, she rushed to her neighborhood grocery store to buy some sauerkraut. 'That's what I just saw on TV so I thought, 'I'm going to take some home,' because I love it -- usually on Reuben sandwiches,' Oxendale said. Others at the store bought the sour cabbage just because they like it."

According to the November 2nd 2005 Chicago Sun-Times, "President Bush on Tuesday outlined a $7.1 billion strategy to get ready for the next pandemic...and the details released Wednesday stress that early on, the public will be depending on scarce supplies of anti-flu drugs and stockpiled vaccines and old-fashioned ways of limiting viral spread." "News like this sends a message to the American public that they had better be ready to use every means available to prevent the spread of this flu because they can't count on the government. Sauerkraut holds out promise to prevent, if not cure Avian Flu. They've been eating piles of the Kimchi variety in Asia and, coincidentally, also had the lowest number of SARS cases in that area." says Chris Smith.

This might help in the shortage of natural gas this winter.

I had been taking Oil of Oregano capsules.

Guess I should find my bottles and start taking it again.

Drawback - it kind of "repeats" on you. Makes you burp the first few days or so and you think you have been eating Italian every meal. LOL

People also take OoO to aid weight loss.

Should get more Olive leaf extract and garlic capsules.

My cure is Black Elderberry Extract (Sambucol). Seems to beat back any flu I've had in very short order over the past 2-3 years. A couple months ago I got something and was out for two days (slept 15 hours with a fever the first day) and was back at it the following day. I also keep OoO, zinc lozenges, and saline nasal spray in my medicine cabinet too, but like the sambucol best.

When I eat kimchi, my breath is capable of killing anything it touches, most especially including flu bugs.

Uh-oh!
Was re-reading the herbal forum and saw that its NOT recommended in the case of the Avian Flu to use formulas that boost cytokine production (Sambucol or elderberry tincture). For typical bugs and viruses, it works great, but NOT this one, DEFINITELY not.

This from PubMed:
We conclude from this study that, in addition to its antiviral properties, Sambucol Elderberry Extract and its formulations activate the healthy immune system by increasing inflammatory cytokine production.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11399518&dopt=Citation

BUT, with the the Avian Flu...

"There is evidence that the immune system of a person infected with H5N1 shifts into overdrive and unleashes a "cytokine storm," Michael Osterholm (director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota) said. That is, the immune system floods the body with too much of the stuff that's supposed to combat infection. The body can't handle it.
"If, in fact, most people are dying of a cytokine storm, medical care will have little effect," Osterholm said.

Yikes. Got kimchi?

I make my own kielbasa. I parboil the sausage and then broil it on a bed of sauerkraut and onions in the oven until the kraut just starts to brown.

All my grandparents were from Poland and I never heard about the potatoes part.

Here in Connecticut they can't stand the idea that something isn't Italian so they call the kielbasa kielbasi. It drives me nuts.

Somehow I think Siegfried, over in the marketing department, at the Fremont Co. Sauerkraut factory, is in for a big bonus.

Just one more thing, Mr. Tubularbender... This is serious! I remember the run on toilet paper that occurred long before Y2K that Johnny Carson initiated from his late night show!!!

After posting that last reply to you guys, Mrs. Wasp and I drove the long distance into town and bought 2 jars and 5 cans of Sauerkraut!!!

We're gonna throw a birdie flu prevention party up here in our Sierra Foothill estate that will generate enough flatulence to enhance the greenhouse gaseous disaster that scares the Demonicrat GovernMentalist/EnvironMentalist/GangGreen Globalists TO DEATH!!!

You eat sauerkraut on New Years?

Is that so the rest of the year has to be better?

I better plan on dying if sauerkraut is the cure for the avian flu, because it will never enter my body orally and I doubt it can be given by IV.

The Pennsylvania Dutch simmer up a pot full of pork roast, sauerkraut, diced potatoes, a little caraway seed, and occasionally some brown sugar or thin sliced apples (to take the bite out of the kraut) as well. It's a traditional dish for New Year's Eve to bring you good luck for the coming year.
