I am not a United Way fan and I haven't given any money to the organization in many years, but maybe they cut this program because Deaf, Inc. was using the money to assist deaf immigrants (many of whom are probably illegal criminals)and/or Deaf, Inc, is duplicating services that other organizations are providing more efficiently.

United Way is for those too lazy to research their own worthy charities-- those who actually spend 90%+ of their contributions to help those they claim to help. On the top of my list are highly focused efficient charities such as the Salvation Army, my church, Veteran's organizations and underfunded diseases such as Cyctic Fibrosis and others who do not get the publicity of high-profile star power diseases such as AIDS.
It is unfortunate that some worthy causes miss out when funding to the United Wat declines-- but hopefully it will encourage them to reach out to the public directly rather than depend on brokers like the United Way.
IMHO, it plays a role similar to the poverty pimps and race baiters in the central cities-- a few dollars to some poster-child worthy causes, but the bulk to prop up their huge infrastructure and reward their politically connected friends.

If you are not a lefty organization you get little or no United Way money. I quit donating to United Way several years ago.

The easiest way for Deaf Inc to get this money back would be to send some deaf homosexuals over to the United way office. Sarcasm folks.

I have never intentionally supported the United Way and never will. Any "charity" that conspires with my employer to tell me what my "fair share" is doesn't need my money.
My "fair share" is what I choose to give of my earnings, not what the recipient decides that it should be.

I quit donating to United Way when I found out years ago they paid their CEO over 400K a year. I believe this is still the case.

Strike the United Way and the Red Cross from your list. The Salvation Army puts more of its donations into the cause than any other orgnaization.

The problem is, United Way is an extortion racket. They get to the upper management of corporations, convince the CEO that supporting UW is good for business, good for the community, and will make him personally look like a superstar...and they're off. There are some corporations where it's career suicide not to pony up a big monthly donation.
Not mine, fortunately, but the pressure is there. I don't give, and I'm vocal about it, but I'm dismissed as a crank. (Not a bad thing sometimes, getting a reputation as a crank). I still have to go to the meetings and watch the films, though. It's amazing some of the crap they support and think I'll want to support, too.
I give to the Salvation Army. And I'm an atheist!

Way back, before the United Way and the scouts made me stop doing anything at all the the United Way, I got my department to have the largest percentage of employees donate to the United Way.
My method - "Give 'em a buck, get 'em off your back". Yep, we had the smallest actual dollar donation, but the largest % of people in the department donating, I think I only had 2 people out of 40 not give $1. That was just a dollar, no weekly thing.
No, the people running the campaign weren't all that happy, but what could they do. The Maintenance Department (we were already the lowest of the low) outdid all the other departments!!
(Yes, I do have an evil streak)

We stopped company contributions to United Way when they went on the offensive in backing the Rump Rangers over the Boy Scouts. Now all donations go directly to Boy Scouts, school groups, and local sports teams, and we have increased our donations to double our old levels. Our employees know the reasons and are very supportive.
One more reason not to support the United Way.......not that we would.
