The staff at Deaf Inc., a social service agency based in Allston-Brighton, got a letter recently, an appeal to participate in the annual fund-raising campaign of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.
It was an ironic moment. Deaf Inc. enjoyed a good relationship with the United Way until recently. But that was before Deaf Inc. was cut off from United Way funding, after a management decision by United Way that its work no longer fit into the charity's priorities.
This is what Deaf Inc. does: It helps people who can't hear manage their lives and live independently and with dignity, a service the United Way apparently finds superfluous.
Funding ended earlier this year. The cut amounted to about $68,000, or 7 percent of Deaf Inc.'s annual budget. That was a drop in a huge bucket: The United Way awarded $36.5 million this fiscal year, according to its spokesman.
''The United Way is supposed to be a safety net for people who have nowhere else to turn," said Karen Schwartzman, vice president of Deaf Inc.'s board. ''If that doesn't describe our clients, I don't know what does."

Communistic in origin, and outlay..
United Way is for crap.
Paging Al Franken.
I am not a United Way fan and I haven't given any money to the organization in many years, but maybe they cut this program because Deaf, Inc. was using the money to assist deaf immigrants (many of whom are probably illegal criminals)and/or Deaf, Inc, is duplicating services that other organizations are providing more efficiently.
We stopped all United Way contributions as well right after they cut off the Boy Scouts. Others can give to support teenage GLAD and Gay oprganizations.
You sure sound like a supporter.
All of this is done in collaboration with diverse partners. Depending on the issue and how the community chooses to address it, United Ways work with schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations, voluntary and neighborhood associations, the faith community, and others.
Their "diverse" partners are quite often gay, and/or pro-abortion...
...schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations
Bet 'ya a dollar they are still giving to Planned Parenthood though!
It is unfortunate that some worthy causes miss out when funding to the United Wat declines-- but hopefully it will encourage them to reach out to the public directly rather than depend on brokers like the United Way.
IMHO, it plays a role similar to the poverty pimps and race baiters in the central cities-- a few dollars to some poster-child worthy causes, but the bulk to prop up their huge infrastructure and reward their politically connected friends.
If you are not a lefty organization you get little or no United Way money. I quit donating to United Way several years ago.
The easiest way for Deaf Inc to get this money back would be to send some deaf homosexuals over to the United way office. Sarcasm folks.
I have never intentionally supported the United Way and never will. Any "charity" that conspires with my employer to tell me what my "fair share" is doesn't need my money.
My "fair share" is what I choose to give of my earnings, not what the recipient decides that it should be.
I quit donating to United Way when I found out years ago they paid their CEO over 400K a year. I believe this is still the case.
UW comes calling I'll say I already gave on my witholding taxes.
The pro-abortion mentality is one of the main reasons why I will not give to UW. I don't even allow them into my office to solicite my employees.
On every Katrina thread, I posted links to the Salvation Army, for the same reason. The American Red Cross lady gets about a half mil in salary and goodies. I was irked even more, when I found out that the gum't reimburses for their spent donations... so where does the money go?
If you want to give money to charity, you gotta do your homework...
Strike the United Way and the Red Cross from your list. The Salvation Army puts more of its donations into the cause than any other orgnaization.
Don't give until it hurts. End the leftist United Way.
Not mine, fortunately, but the pressure is there. I don't give, and I'm vocal about it, but I'm dismissed as a crank. (Not a bad thing sometimes, getting a reputation as a crank). I still have to go to the meetings and watch the films, though. It's amazing some of the crap they support and think I'll want to support, too.
I give to the Salvation Army. And I'm an atheist!
