The US has revealed that it removed more than 1.7 metric tons of radioactive material from Iraq in a secret operation last month.

"This operation was a major achievement," said US Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham in a statement.

He said it would keep "potentially dangerous nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists."

Along with 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium, about 1,000 "highly radioactive sources" were also removed.

The material was taken from a former nuclear research facility on 23 June, after being packaged by 20 experts from the US Energy Department's secret laboratories.

It was flown out of the country aboard a military plane in a joint operation with the Department of Defense, and is being stored temporarily at a Department of Energy facility...

they expend all there ammo by firing there magic thunder sticks into the air in celebration, rather than at their targets.

I wonder why the liberals have not complained to Osamma about that??? It has to be punching holes in the ozone and causing more global warming having those hot bullets shooting into the air. Mummmm.

Jimmah Cahtah said on the Today Show that Bush made this stuff up.

Wasn't it known that saddam had a lot of uranium before the war? I seem to recall that NATO (or some other multinational group) had video surveillance of a large stock pile. I'll try to dig up the article.

You are so right! Bush manages a good speech once in a while, but that isn't enough to counteract the incessant criticism, lies, and distortion that the MSM and Democrats are bombarding the public with. Why aren't his spokespeople pointing out the truth about Iraq weapons? I don't understand it. It's almost like they've given up trying to influence public opinion. Reagan he ain't and that's a major problem with his presidency.

It seems the Dems and the MSM wanted real-time finding of huge stockpiles of WMD's. I can see the Bush administration wanting to keep secret the 1.77 tons of *enriched* uranium from the media or the Dems. It would be a major security issue to secure and remove that material. Don't want any leaks that could get to the insurgents about this stuff (not that the MSM or Dems would make such a leak /sarc).

The people who conducted this as a "secret" operation are either idiots, or no friends of the administration. This should have been quite public.

Yeah right. The article states that the nuclear material was flown out of Iraq. Look how the MSM and environazis piss and moan when radioactive anything is transported. If this was public info, we NEVER would have been able to transport it anywhere near the US.

More amazing how the Bush administration and the rest of the Stupid Party avoids any mention, too.

Right, to them absence of that is evidence of total failure.

As for the "right time" mentioned by a previos poster, I would offer that this time in '07 would do quite nicely to lay it all out point by point by point. The dems will not stand a chance if they try to pull a "kerry".

That's why the Dems are screaming all the time. They have no substantive issue to go after Bush with. They are trying to find the smallest things and blow them out of proportion, especially compared to what the Clintons got away with. They will try the 'Republicans and Bush are corrupt' mantra in order to erode support rather than actually offer any ideas on what they would do if given power.

I'll join your chorus. Karl Rove may be a re-election genious, but he sucks at firing back at the dems and liberal media, helping Bush set NUMEROUS records straight. In fairness, Rove may not have anything to do with answering attacks to the administration, but whoever is in charge of P.R. needs firing....

It's time for Bush to give one helluva speech that will rock their commie world and make them STFU! And please, Mr. President, practice the speech so that you don't botch it. Please give a fire and brimstone delivery & put your enemies on notice that you are going to call them on their lies and set the record straight.

The people who conduct such operations - military special forces, nuclear regulation/proliferation control - are not in the habit of making anything public. While not necessarily "secret", they do operate on a need-to-know basis.

Dealing with it, and making sure they can deal with it in the future, is far more important to them than telling details to whiny armchair pundits.

I agree, but given the constantly shifting "proof" of some of these things, combined with the need to maintain confidential sources, I can understand why the Administration would be hesitant to jump in with both feet on a PR campaign based on ANY of this info.

Consider the Atta/Al-Ani meeting: the Czechs have never backed off this; and the Iraqi records IMPLY that it occurred, but to my knowledge there is no other independent verification. Now, I believe the Czechs, but if Bush went out with just that info, there would be a half-dozen "sources" that would discredit this. Their discrediting would be a lie, but it would sufficiently muddy the waters that such a PR move by Bush would result in less credibility, not more.

"That's why the Dems are screaming all the time"

Indeed, they have taken the idea that the squeaky wheel gets the oil, and in the 90's it worked for them, so they decided to squeak louder and more often.

What they have failed to notice is that American people have the distinct ability to REPLACE the wheel when oil doesn't calm the squeaking.

This is BS. If there were any truth to it Bush would have hammered this point during the campaign last year.
