PARIS, France -- French President Jacques Chirac has called for calm and warned of a "dangerous situation" following a sixth night of violence in poor Paris suburbs.
"The law must be applied firmly and in a spirit of dialogue and respect," Chirac told a Cabinet meeting Wednesday. "The absence of dialogue and an escalation of a lack of respect will lead to a dangerous situation."
"Zones without law cannot exist in the republic," Chirac said. His remarks were passed on to reporters by government spokesman Jean-Francois Cope.
The spokesman said Chirac acknowledged the "profound frustrations" of troubled neighborhoods but said violence was not the answer and that efforts must be stepped up to combat it, The Associated Press reported.
The unrest, triggered last week by the deaths of two teenagers, spread Tuesday night to at least nine towns in the suburbs north and northeast of Paris as police clashed with angry youths and dozens of vehicles were set on fire

Do we turn away all the non Muslim boat people from France?
This is a real heartbreaker..........
Maybe more America bashing or appeasement will help stop the riot.
No sympathy here.
"Dweeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"
"Paris burns -- and Denmark."
I have hope for Denmark. The Danes can be tough when they need to be.
Unfortunately you be right
"Chirac. the only thing those islamofacists will understand is a shoot to kill order that is swiftly executed. Otherwise you will lose control of your country forever."
Neither of these two things will come to pass.
What will happen is that there will be an increased police presence, which will restore order in these areas for awhile. The government cannot be seen to retreat in the face of an immigrant strike (a general strike on a political issue by the French?, yes, but a violent riot by Arabs?, no). The fires and rioting will abate, with little to no loss of life (thus far, there have been only perhaps four deaths, including the first two kids who essentially killed themselves by climbing an electric pole, touching off the riots).
The government will attempt to redress the situation by applying more policing, and some cosmetic attention to jobs, but things will not much change. 93% of the French people are not Arabs. Nobody is going to "lose control of France forever". And there will be no "shoot to kill" order. Police forces in civilized countries are not issued orders like that in the face of restive youths and some property damage. Obviously if armed gangs came onto the streets and began to actually kill the security forces, tactics would change. But the current situation is not that, and won't become that.
What needs to happen is that the spread of radical Islam needs to be vigorously clamped down upon. Youths will be turbulent. It is imperative that the turbulence not be mixed with some sort of grander religious notion.
This can get really ugly, really fast. Most civil wars are. This is just the beginning of a historic battle in the heart of Europe, probably equal in nastiness to the Thirty Years War.
"They are already fingering one guy for the blame." Yes, isn't it the guy who said, "The people who are attacking police are THUGS?" God forbid someone should be allowed to speak the Truth.
"We are allowing Islamaloonies to invade America on a daily basis"
True that, BUT we ( american born citizens) still have our own guns!
LOL... that's the first thing that popped into my head when I read the headline!
You are saying there are only 4.2 million mulsims in France?
That should take care of half of them..
Yes! The first requirement for terrorist activities is a large insular community of sympathizers in which the actions can be incubated and back into which the terrorist can melt. We cannot allow the Islamist "teachers" to create such communities around mosques as they have done in England and Southeast Asia.
I've psoted this on several other related threads today. I view these riots as an attempt to get the French to crack down hard, as they are want to do, which will then be used as the "excuse" for a major terrorist strike in France..
"We cannot allow the Islamist "teachers" to create such communities around mosques as they have done in England and Southeast Asia."
You mean like in California,(lodi) Oklahoma (norman)and Michigan (detroit)?
Your logic makes sense.
And Portland, Virginia, Florida and Buffalo, Yes.
I tend to disagree, as I have heard several comments from Islamic youth who grew up in mainstream America, and have been here their entire life's, including:
"I am not an American, I am Pakistani."
and in response to September 11
"Your government planned this with Mossad so they could attack my people."
A couple run of the mill, high-school athletes, well-educated, smart kids. An unsular society is ideal, but is certainly not necessary.
