AUSTRALIA RECEIVES THREAT OF TERROR ATTACK
11/2/2005, 5:05 a.m. ET
By ROD McGUIRK
The Associated Press
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) Australian authorities have received specific intelligence that terrorists are planning an attack on the country, Prime Minister John Howard said Wednesday, calling on lawmakers to increase the powers of Australia's intelligence agencies.
Howard refused to give any details of the threat, saying he did not want to jeopardize counterterror operations, but he introduced a minor amendment to counterterrorism laws in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
"The reason for this amendment is that the government has received specific intelligence and police information this week which gives cause for serious concern about a potential terrorist threat," Howard said at a nationally televised news conference in Canberra.
"We have seen material; it is a cause of concern; we have been given advice that if this amendment is enacted as soon as possible, the capacity of the authorities to respond will be strengthened," he added.
There has never been a major terror attack on Australian soil but the country's citizens and diplomatic outposts have been hit repeatedly in recent years by bombings most notably in Indonesia, where Canberra's embassy in Jakarta was hit by a 2004 suicide minivan bomb and dozens of its citizens have been killed in attacks on the tourist island of Bali in 2002 and on Oct. 1 this year.
Howard said the amendment meant that when prosecuting someone for planning a terrorist act, authorities would not have to identify a specific terrorist act.
It will also allow groups to be banned based on intelligence that it is preparing an unspecified terrorist act rather outlining details of a specific plot.
Aldo Borgu, an intelligence expert from the Canberra-based Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said the government may be planning to ban the radical Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir.
"They now want to ban organizations that aren't necessarily terrorist groups but might advocate terrorism," Borgu said.
Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said in August that the government was considering outlawing Hizb ut-Tahrir as a counterterrorism precaution but had no legal basis to list it as a terrorist organization.
Britain banned the group which has called for attacks against coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as U.S. and Israeli interests elsewhere after the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52.
Borgu noted, however, that the government did not increase the official threat level from medium despite Howard's comments.
"The problem the government is going to have is explaining the inconsistency between the potential terrorist threat but not changing the threat alert level," he said.
The government has kept the threat level constant since it was elevated to medium in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.

"The sky is dark" - wow, I don't know if that's common British phraseology, but in this context it sounds uncomfortably ominous... :-(
Hmmmm, I hadn't really realized that "youth" is known as the group name, not a reference to their tender ages.
ABDELWAHEB BAKLI, 31, MUSLIM YOUTH OF FRANCE PRESIDENT
OMAR AIT BOUALI, 44, YOUTH WORKER IN AUBERVILLIERS
SAMIA AMARA, 23, YOUTH WORKER NEAR PARIS
BRAHIM ELHADI, 29, YOUTH WORKER IN LILLE

Thank you!
"The sky is dark"
Those 4 words in particular, gave me the chills.
Thanks for the new thread, great job as always.
Happy anniversary to everyone. Wow, two years have just flown by. I hope & pray we can make it another two years with no attacks happening in this country.
What a load!! I wonder if the blood tests have come back yet on all the Exxon employees he injected???? Too bad we can't inject him with something and let him squirm wondering what it was.
Considering how proactive the Brits have been capturing and smoking out suspects this article is frightening. That there could be attacks imminent is hard to believe. Although the fact that they let all those mulsims immigrate to Britain doesn't help.
We have done the same, stupid, stupid, stupid. They still come in on student visas, and I wonder how many are taking classes in flight training as we speak, or biology/chemistry so they can blow us up some day or infect us with something.
How about we throw them off the train right behind their package! We have to stop coddling these scum, none of their intentions for us are good, that's a fact. IMO of course.
We all know what the London bombers did with their designer perfume!!
Australia should be on high alert!
I don't see anywhere that the blood tests have come back yet.
Let him squirm....LOL, I bet the 1000+ Exxon employees with agree with you too.

Muslim football fans say praying led to profiling
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/2/05
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEWARK Several Muslim football fans claim they were profiled and unfairly detained by stadium security personnel and the FBI at Giants Stadium during a game in September when they were seen praying, alarming other fans who considered their behavior suspicious.
Five fans attending the New York Giants-New Orleans Saints game at the Meadowlands on Sept. 19 were removed from their seats and questioned by security personnel after other fans saw them prostrating themselves on the ground as part of daily Muslim prayers, which must be performed five times each day, Sohail Mohammed, a lawyer for one of the men, said Tuesday.
The men plan to detail their experience at a news conference today in New York designed to foster greater understanding of Islam and the religious practices of Muslims.
"This is a classic example of "If you want to pray, you'll have to pay,' " Mohammed said. "These folks were exercising their fundamental right to practice their faith, and they wanted to enjoy, as Americans, their favorite sport."
Soon after walking through the gates and having their tickets scanned, the men found an open space near the concrete pillars by walkways and escalators at Gate D, and began to pray during the first quarter, said one of the men, who asked not to be identified because he fears harassment.
Other fans apparently notified security, who followed the men to their seats and asked them to come with them during the third quarter, the man said.
