The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

One Dead In Miami Airport Shooting

MIAMI, Dec. 7, 2005

(CBS/AP) A federal air marshal shot and killed a man Wednesday at Miami International Airport, CBS News' Bob Orr reports.

The incident occurred after American Airlines Flight 924 from Medellin, Colombia, landed in Miami on its way to Orlando.

The plane was parked at Gate 42 in the D concourse when, according to federal officials, one of the passengers on the plane got up, started running through the plane screaming that he had an explosive with him, perhaps in a backpack.

At that point, federal air marshals tried to intervene. When the man failed to stop there was a pursuit that then led on to the jetway. At least one shot was then apparently fired.

One federal official told Orr the man wasn't acting right, that he was acting a little bit crazy and started spouting all kinds of things.

It is important to note that this is the first time that a federal air marshal has discharged a gun on a U.S. passenger plane.

This Public Announcement is being issued to remind American Citizens that the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) will be held in Hong Kong December 13-18, 2005, and to alert Americans to the likelihood of protests and demonstrations surrounding the event. This Public Announcement expires on December 19, 2005

Protests and Demonstrations: Americans should be aware of the possibility of protests and demonstrations related to the WTO conference, some of which may become violent. Although the WTO sessions will take place in the Wan Chai area of Hong Kong Island, protests may also occur at other locations. While the majority of these demonstrations are not likely to target American citizens, the threat of being caught up accidentally in some incident is such that Americans are strongly advised to monitor local media and avoid large crowds and protests.

Protestors will be directed to stage demonstrations at the Wan Chai Sports Ground and the Wan Chai public cargo working area. Victoria Park in Causeway Bay has also been mentioned as a demonstration site. Hotels near Pacific Place, Tamar and areas adjacent to the WTO site, where many delegates will stay, may also be the sites of protests and/or security zones. Traffic lanes between the hotels and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in Wan Chai where the WTO will be held will be congested, and may be the sites of protests and/or subject to security restrictions. Foreign consulates, including the U.S. Consulate General, as well as Chater Garden and Government House may also be the sites of protests. At least one group has indicated it will protest in Kowloon.

Access in the Wan Chai Area: In an effort to control activities around the Wan Chai WTO site, public transportation in and through the area will be subject to short-notice stoppages and rerouting. The Hong Kong Police have set up a web page to track these changes at http://www.info.gov.hk/police/hkp-home/english/misc/mc6/traarr.htm. Real time traffic information via webcam, road closure details and more are also online at http://traffic.td.gov.hk/. Areas will also be designated off-limits to those without proper WTO-issued credentials. Visitors to the nearby areas may be required to show photo ID and submit to security screening. Parking will be unavailable near the WTO site.

Americans living or traveling in Hong Kong are encouraged to register and update their contact information at the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong. Registration may be done on line, and can be done in advance of travel. Information on registering can be found at the Department of State’s Consular Affairs website: https://travelregistration.state.gov.

Hi! I addressed the loss issue to Crabbie and the other part of the post to you to please keep us apprised of the outcome of the veterinarian visit (which you did today). Will pray the surgery for Libbie goes well.

One of my cats ran off from the kitchen with a very very small medallion in her mouth. I had dropped it and she got to it before I possibly could. She ran into two different rooms before I could catch her and the medallion was missing by then. I've had no luck locating the medallion and fear she may have swallowed it. Thus far she is not showing any signs of a problem, but we are watching her closely - just in case. Never a dull moment with those little critters we love!

PAKISTAN: 'TALIBAN INVOLVEMENT' IN KIDNAP OF JOURNALIST IN WAZIRISTAN

Miranshah, 7 Dec. (AKI/DAWN) - The authorities in North Waziristan, the tribal areas that lie on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, have not been able to trace the whereabouts of a local journalist who was kidnapped on Monday, but have said that the Taliban could be involved in the kidnapping of Hayatullah Khan. Hayatullah, a correspondent for an Islamabad newspaper and contributor to a German wire service, is also the nephew of Haji Mohammad Siddiq, the owner of the home in Waziristan which is believed to have been hit in a missile attack last Wednesday in which the al-Qaeda leader Hamza Rabia was allegedly killed.

Speaking to a delegation from the Tribal Union of Journalists on Tuesday, a tribal official from the North Waziristan Agency, Zaheerul Islam, said that although investigators had not yet reached any conclusions, it was possible that “Taliban elements” had a hand in the kidnapping of Hayatullah Khan.

Islam told journalists that investigations were underway to trace the whereabouts of Hayatullah and promised them that the government would provide security to local journalists and enable them to continue their professional duties.

Haji Mohammad Siddiq has been summoned for questioning by the local authorities after last Wednesday's attack.

According to Pakistani officials, the al-Qaeda leader, Hamza Rabia, and four others were killed while they were handling explosives on Wednesday night, while US news reports said he was killed by a US missile attack. According to US intelligence officials, Hamza Rabia, an Egyptian, was a close associate of al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri, who is wanted in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. Reports also suggest that Hamza Rabia had replaced Abu Faraj al Libbi, another al-Qaeda leader who was captured in Pakistan in May.

Officials and sources within the the journalist's family have said that unidentified gunmen kidnapped Hayatullah near the town of Mirali on Monday. The journalist is believed to have been kidnapped while he was on his way to the Kajori check-post when five masked men armed with assault rifles bundled him into a car and sped away.

According to sources, Hayatullah had been captured sometime ago by allied forces in Angor Adda in the South Waziristan Agency. He was kept in detention for two months at the Bagram airbase.

The North Waziristan Union of Journalists has condemned Hayatullah’s kidnapping and appealed to the government to ensure his safe recovery. The union has asked the administration to arrest the culprits and provide security to journalists in the agency.
