The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Some think he is dead, others that he is hiding because he is scared of being killed.

Whatever the reason for the strange disappearance of Osama bin Laden, not seen alive since his last mocking video statement a year ago, he is no longer the face of the global "jihad" against the West.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi { TM 25,TM 27 }, the Jordanian responsible for some of the worst atrocities in Iraq, has become the hero of the hour on militant Islamist websites.

4 more suspected haemorrhagic fever patients arrive in CHK

KARACHI: Four more suspected viral haemorrhagic fever patients have been admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) in the last 24 hours.

Already, three patients suffering from suspected viral haemorrhagic fever have been under treatment at the hospital since Friday, at the isolated ward where they have improved considerably. The CHK medical superintendent, Dr Kaleem Butt, noticed that all such patients admitted so far were young people. Jamshaid, aged 25, a resident of Malir, was sent by Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) to CHK on November 29. He was admitted to the isolation ward of the CHK where his condition appears stable. 32-year-old Dawood, a resident of Ibrahim Goth in

Korangi, who owns a cattle farm, came to CHK with high fever and bleeding from his nose and mouth. He was shifted him immediately to the newly established isolated ward. Eighteen-year-old Naureen of Landhi was brought to CHK in a similar condition and was admitted there. Dr Kaleem Butt attributed the frequent arrivals of suspected viral haemorrhagic fever cases at the CHK to the coverage of the issue by the media.

Los Alamos possibly missing 600 # plutonium

Snip: Enough plutonium to make dozens of nuclear bombs hasn't been accounted for at the UC-run Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and may be missing, an activist group says in a new report.

There is no evidence that the weapons-grade plutonium has been stolen or diverted for illegal purposes, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research said. However, the amount of unaccounted-for plutonium -- more than 600 pounds, and possibly several times that -- is so great that it raises "a vast security issue," the group said in a report to be made public today.

The institute, which is based in Takoma Park, Md., says it compared data from five publicly available reports and documents issued by the U.S. Energy Department and Los Alamos from 1996 to 2004 and found inconsistencies in them. It says the records aren't clear on what the lab did with the plutonium, a byproduct of nuclear bomb research at Los Alamos.

Cheese sold in LA made people sick

Snip: A multiagency task force formed to investigate sales of illegal cheese discovered that the markets were selling queso fresco made from unpasteurized milk, a "perfect breeding ground for bacteria" that can cause illness and even death, authorities said.

The stores purchased the cheese from street vendors, sometimes out of the back of a car or van.

Off Topic: Coffee jump starts short-term memory

Snip: For the first time, researchers have demonstrated that caffeine modulates short-term working memory. The study was presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

"We were able to show that caffeine modulates a higher brain function through its effects on distinct areas of the brain," said the paper's lead author, Florian Koppelstatter, M.D., Ph.D., radiology fellow at Medical University Innsbruck in Austria.

Bat species may be harboring ebola virus

Snip: A team of scientists may have cracked the mystery of the reservoir or source of the deadly Ebola virus, finding evidence of the virus in three species of fruit bats in Gabon and the Republic of Congo. While they say their work isn't proof positive that these bats are the sole reservoir of Ebola, they believe their findings "strongly suggest" these bats are one source of the virus.

"We can not exclude that other species of bats might also be a reservoir," lead author Eric Leroy said in an e-mail Wednesday from Gabon, where he is based at the Centre International de Recherches Medicales de Franceville. Fruit bats are eaten by humans in the areas where Leroy's team studied, suggesting a possible mode of transmission of the virus. The paper says educating people about the risk of eating bats may help reduce future outbreaks in humans.

Contaminated beef sold at Canadian Safeway stores

Snip: A contaminated beef warning has gone out to consumers in BC and Alberta. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says people should not eat ground beef bought between October 6th and 20th from Canada Safeway stores in the two provinces. The regular, lean and extra-lean ground beef may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The agency says there have been a number of reported illnesses.
