The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
What's become of bin Laden since he gave us all the slip?
Full Story

Some think he is dead, others that he is hiding because he is scared of being killed.

Whatever the reason for the strange disappearance of Osama bin Laden, not seen alive since his last mocking video statement a year ago, he is no longer the face of the global "jihad" against the West.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi { TM 25,TM 27 }, the Jordanian responsible for some of the worst atrocities in Iraq, has become the hero of the hour on militant Islamist websites.

Israel’s northern border was put on a high alert Thursday
night - the second time in two weeks

November 17, 2005, 10:38 PM (GMT+02:00)

Hizballah bands are reported by intelligence to be heading for raids against Israeli military border positions and villages. There is also a threat that Hizballah plans to abduct Israeli soldiers and civilians and take them to Lebanon as hostages.

DEBKAfile’s sources report Syria is leaning hard on Hizballah to force the Lebanese group to generate a crisis on the Israeli border that will ease the international pressure on Damascus. The Syrians want the Lebanese Shiite terrorists to additionally call the Shiite masses out to the streets of Beirut in order to disrupt the UN investigation of the Hariri murder which is closing in on Syrian officials.

They also demand that the Hizballah cabinet minister quit and so bring down the anti-Damascus Fouad Siniora government.

A similar high alert was declared on the Israeli border two weeks ago Nov. 3.

Beijing blocks foreign newspapers Wonder how China Beijing would react if we blocked Chinese goods from Americans? Oops forgot, that wouldn't be politically correct.

Snip: Beijing has halted plans to allow foreign newspapers to print in China because of concerns raised by recent “colour revolutions” against authoritarian governments in Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, according to a senior media regulator. Shi Zongyuan, head of the General Administration of Press and Publication, said the role of the international media in such popular revolts had prompted the suspension of what had been an cautious, but significant easing of China’s curbs on foreign news publications.

“The ‘colour revolutions’ were a reminder not to let saboteurs into the house and that the door must be closed, so we have closed it temporarily,” Mr Shi said in an interview with the FT. Mr Shi’s remarks underline the increasing concern with which Chinese leaders have viewed the toppling of the government of Georgia in 2003, of Ukraine in 2004 and of Kyrgyzstan earlier this year.

Moscow has alleged that the hand of America’s CIA lay behind some of these revolts.Fears that China’s own political order could also be undermined have fuelled a broad effort by Beijing propaganda officials to tighten controls on cultural and media imports.

Lie detectors may be the next step in airline security

Snip: new walk-through airport lie detector made in Israel may prove to be the toughest challenge yet for potential hijackers or drug smugglers. Tested in Russia, the two-stage GK-1 voice analyzer requires that passengers don headphones at a console and answer "yes" or "no" into a microphone to questions about whether they are planning something illicit.

The software will almost always pick up uncontrollable tremors in the voice that give away liars or those with something to hide, say its designers at Israeli firm Nemesysco. "In our trial, 500 passengers went through the test, and then each was subjected to full traditional searches," said Chief Executive Officer Amir Liberman. "The one person found to be planning something illegal was the one who failed our test."

Off Topic: Dupont hid chemical risk studies

Snip: WASHINGTON - DuPont Co. hid studies showing the risks of a Teflon-related chemical used to line candy wrappers, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags and hundreds of other food containers, according to internal company documents and a former employee.

The chemical Zonyl can rub off the liner and get into food. Once in a person's body, it can break down into perfluorooctanoic acid and its salts, known as PFOA, a related chemical used in the making of Teflon-coated cookware.

Hi LibertyRocks.
Just got home from a getting a yearly
checkup.
Yuk.

Anyway, I lived in one of those old farm houses
for a very long time and know how cold it can
get inside the house.

I sewed covers for all the computer equipment,
printers, etc. and put them on every piece of
computer-related equipment when they were not in use.

That helped and keeping the office door open about an
hour before using the computer helped to warm up the
office.

You stay warm and take care of yourself.

Smiling...

It's almost Thanksgiving.

This is only part of the report, but has the figures that are important. Note 50% died. - ProMED-mail [In essence the situation is unchanged since yesterday's reports. 2 human cases of avian influenza in China have been confirmed on the basis of laboratory tests: a 24 year old woman in Anhui province who died and an 8 year old boy in Hunan province who survived infection. ---------------------------------------------- The boy's 12 year old sister died in hospital as a consequence of a respiratory illness, but was cremated before appropriate tests could be competed. Therefore it cannot now be established whether this incident ranks as a "cluster" of H5N1 avian influenza cases, particularly as the children's teacher -- although still in hospital -- has not been confirmed as suffering from avian influenza virus infection. -------------------------------------------- As of Thu 17 Nov 2005, the cumulative numbers of WHO-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection since the beginning of the East Asian outbreaks in December 2003 are the following: Indonesia, 11 cases with 7 deaths; Viet Nam, 92 cases with 42 deaths; Thailand, 21 cases with 13 deaths; Cambodia, 4 cases with 4 deaths; and China, 2 cases with 1 death; giving an overall total of 130 cases and 67 deaths. - Mod.CP]

Waiting for a report from you on that darling baby!

12 Japanese children die after taking Tamiflu

Snip: In a report posted online, the US Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that 12 children had died in Japan from causes including heart attack, suicide, pneumonia and acute pancreatitis. Four had suffered a "sudden death", which was "an unusual phenomenon in otherwise healthy children". All had taken Tamiflu.

Jihad computer whiz to be extradited

Snip: A computer expert from South London who is wanted in America for running a cluster of websites that allegedly supported terrorism and attacks on US servicemen is to be extradited, Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, has decided.

Documentary reveals London bomber's westernized youth

Snip: Rob Cardiss, a school friend, told last night's radio documentary Biography of a Bomber that Khan "seemed to have more white friends than Asian friends [and] ... used to hang around with white lads playing football."

Mr Cardiss said: "He was very English. Some of the other Pakistani guys used to talk about Muslim suffering around the world but with Sidique you'd never really know what religion he was from."

Islamic Society of Boston claims media conspiracy link to terrorists

Snip: They started out as two fairly typical libel suits against two Boston News outlets. But the sweeping litigation just filed by the Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) against the Boston Herald, Channel 25, and some activists is shaping up to be a nasty confrontation that could spill beyond the media universe to pit portions of the local Jewish and Muslim communities against each other, open deep social and ideological wounds, and generate international headlines.

I've been reading some very negative reports about Tamiflu.

Scary.

For years, we have been feeding the wild turkeys around our house. No longer. I'm afraid a sick one might show up here.

If the Avian flu becomes a problem around here, we shall just bunker down. Like AppalachianDweller, we have enough resources to do so.

You're both welcome. Thanks for reading the links - glad someone is (smiling).

Morocco pardons 10,000

Snip: A senior ministry official said there were no Islamic militants jailed on terrorism charges among those pardoned. He had no details on the nationalities of foreigners affected. "The list is drafted by the royal palace, it did not include any Islamists this time," he said.

Off Topic: Drinking too much water can damage kidneys

Snip: TORONTO (CP) - Serious kidney damage shown by more than 200 residents of Walkerton, Ont., is the result of drinking too much water, not E. coli poisoning, and it's a problem that could be afflicting thousands across the country, researchers told The Canadian Press.

The "completely preventable" condition is one of the findings of a long-term health study into the tainted-water tragedy, a lead researcher said Wednesday.

Sky Harbor cab drivers

Snip: Said estimates that about half of Sky Harbor cab drivers are Muslim. Some are American, Bosnian, and Pakistani, while others are Middle Eastern.

Illegal immigrants take many reconstruction jobs in New Orleans

Snip: The work immigrants do in New Orleans is dirty, difficult, and sometimes dangerous, but the pay is good. Roofers can make $300 a day in New Orleans and many construction jobs pay $15 to $17 an hour. Workers are in demand in New Orleans because about 140,000 residences were destroyed or severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Many people displaced by the disaster have no home to which they can return.

But some evacuees say contractors who accept funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other federal agencies should give preference to former residents when it comes to hiring workers. Contractors can pay immigrant workers less and not worry about housing, leaving them to live for weeks at a time in tents or trailers.

Among those watching the situation is Chris Simcox, co-founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, which advocates stricter enforcement of immigration laws. In a VOA phone interview, he says the Minutemen may soon go to New Orleans.

New emergency system alerts hospitals to possible threats

Snip: The North Carolina Hospital Emergency Surveillance System, or N-CHESS, is the first of its kind in the country. It will monitor patients' symptoms to alert public health officials of possible outbreaks.

Right now, about half of the state's hospitals submit data to the system. That includes New Hanover Regional Medical Center, which was an early adopter of similar software. By electronically monitoring symptoms, officials can track in real time any emerging health threat faster than ever before.

The $3.4 million system is being paid for with federal funds marked to improve the nation's ability to respond and detect bioterrorism threats.
