As soon as the Dems get wind that this is backfiring with the American public (which will be the case if even the MSM are asking hard questions), they'll start backpedaling.

This is a big trial balloon to appease the looney left. May even be a diversion tactic to show they're "tough" because they realize Alito IS going to be confirmed, and they'll point to this and tell the wacky conspiratorial left, "Well, at least we tried."
