SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - A city mayor was arrested Tuesday by federal agents and charged with extorting $10,000 in campaign contributions a week before election day, an FBI official said.
Mayor Richard Goyette, 36, accepted two illegal campaign contributions of $5,000 each, said Michael O'Reilly, the FBI's top agent in western Massachusetts. By law, candidates are allowed to accept a maximum of $500 from each donor.
Goyette, who was in federal custody and expected to appear in court Tuesday afternoon, is running for a second term in next week's election. The FBI said the violations occurred during this election cycle.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William Welch said Goyette got the contributions from two business owners in exchange for favors, but he would not comment further.
A woman who answered the phone at Goyette's house declined to comment.
Chicopee, a working-class city of about 50,000, is home to Westover Air Base and located about 90 miles southwest of Boston.
He has no affiliation to any party?

Hopefully he is guilty.... an incorrect arrest a week before the election could sure influence things...
Unless his party changed in the last 11 months, he's a Republican (Some Old Media are beginning to learn the game).

TrueBlueAmerican, darn you... :D
Thanks. Sorry to see he is a pubbie. If he's guilty, throw the book at him. If it's a dirty campaign trick by the other side, throw the book at them.
