With yesterday's nomination of Sam Alito to the Supreme Court, President Bush reached into his John Roberts playbook to name a judicial conservative with impeccable credentials. The nominee deserves to be confirmed easily and soon, and he likely will be--though not without a tougher fight and probably with a smaller margin of Democratic support.
Like Chief Justice Roberts, Judge Alito is one of the leading jurists on the federal bench, having been appointed to the Third Circuit by the first President Bush and confirmed unanimously by a Democratic-controlled Senate. Before that he served as an assistant solicitor general in the Reagan Administration, arguing 12 cases before the Supreme Court; as U.S. Attorney for New Jersey; and as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel. No one can say he isn't qualified.
However, Judge Alito has put in 15 years on the federal bench, compared with Mr. Roberts's two, and produced a far longer list of judicial opinions that are now being scrutinized for evidence of what kind of Justice he would make. The left is already attacking his rulings, which we agree are notable, but less for their outcomes than for their legal reasoning. Judge Alito shows every sign of being a careful constitutionalist with a deep respect for precedent.

Misunderestimated again?
"Anyone else wonder if that whole Miers thing wasn't "laying smoke" for what may turn into the mother of all battles with the 'Rats..."
No.
Could be. But then again, maybe I'm wrong...Karl Rove has been too distracted lately to pull it off... :)
Not on the top of Kerry and Kennedy list. TFB.
AMEN!
I do not need to know every credential Judge Alito has to know he would be a great Justice. The fact that Chuck Schumer hates him is enough for me.
Its amazing how much credit for being intelligent the Bush administration gets from the Left when it is conspiracy minded intelligence.
According to the Moonbats over at DU, the Bush administration is the smartest, most devious bunch of incompetent idiots ever to run the WH !
No. Miers did real damage to everyone involved. No brilliant master plan there...
LOL! So true, so true!
Aside from the Planned Parenthood and Christian crèche rulings, Alito has found in one case that the constitution does not require states to enact family and medical leave legislation. That tells me more about him than any amount of nicknaming or cheerleading. I think we have a winner here.
Hopefully, he has no skeletons and Frist can keep McCain and his toadies in check. But as with Clarence Thomas, even in the face of low tactics by liberals, Alito seems destined for the high court.
My husband who is a very smart man, believes the Miers mess was a designed play. I am beginning to think so as well.
Stop drinking that koolaid!
I hope the Surrendering Senate Seven realize THIS is the battle worthy of using the Constitutional Option.
Not even remotely.
The GOP controls both Houses of Congress, the Presidency, and most appointments to the Supreme Court have been made by GOP Presidents. In addition, most state legislatures and Governorships are GOP as well.
Conservatives will never have a better opportunity to get a truly conservative member of the SCotUS than right here, right now. I'm ecstatic about the possibility of finally getting another actual, bonafide conservative on the court.
It's also an opportunity for the GOP to walk the talk on conservatism, something that's long past due.
What I think conservatives often forget is that getting conservatives elected to political office only gives you the OPPORTUNITY to try to institute your policies. It doesn't guarantee that they will actually be instituted.
No, but I wonder if you've been inhaling smoke.
