Republicans in the Gang of 14 As a reminder, these are the Republicans who explicitly rejected the use of the filibuster against judicial nominations except in "extraordinary circumstances."
Lincoln Chafee (Rhode Island) 202-224-2921
Susan Collins (Maine) 202-224-2523
Mike DeWine (Ohio) 202-224-2315
Lindsey Graham (South Carolina) 202-224-5972
John McCain (Arizona) 202-224-2235
John Warner (Virginia) 202-224-2023
Olympia Snowe (Maine) 202-224-5344
Call them and make sure they know that Samuel Alito is not an "extraordinary circumstance."
Sen Lindsey Graham has come out in support of Judge Alito.
I think DeWine has as well. Makes sense - they're both in trouble back home for their role in the Gang of 14 deal.
Graham and Dewine have already said that Alito is very qualified and did not reach the level of "extreme". I would still make the calls to them though.
Chafee's statement was very Chafeeish. He wants to wait and see. Doubtful he can be counted on for anything Republican except for picking up his share of RNC money for his next campaign.
I expect McCain to.
I hope Warner will.
Chafee, Collins, and Snowe, in tandem with Spectre, will be the four Republican votes against.
How many Republicans can we lose if the Democratsa hold strong together?
"Chafee, Collins, and Snowe, in tandem with Spectre, will be the four Republican votes against."
I tend to place Specter in the pro column.
But even the RINOs are running scared of the conservative base right now, so I doubt that more than the 4 I mentioned will go against Alito.
have we heard about any of the dem seven?
Can we add Specter to this even though he is not one of the 7???
I wonder if RNC donors in the RINO states can request their donations be returned, or redirected to another race?
It would be a visceral joy to win confirmation for Alito with uber-RINO Specte voting no in any case.
McCain and Warner and Graham and DeWine will support the nominee. McCain has to if he wants any chance at all at the GOP nod. Specter will probably defect though.
"Which way Spectre votes in the end depends on what comes first for him: if it is his own advocacy of abortion, he'll vote against Alito. If it is his interest in remaining Judiciary Committee Chair, he'll vote for Alito."
Which would you think was nearest and dearest to his heart?
My advice is for all Republicans to stop donating to the RNC completely. Donate instead to specific conservative Republican candidates, and to groups that support the furtherance of conservative interests in the political sphere. Giving to the RNC is signing a blank check, giving them the authority to ship your money to whichever RINO entrances them.
Spectre would not vote for anyone if he knows they are against Roe. No one.
Completely agree. I just hope Spectre does not try any tricks in Committee.
I'd give a small lead to his advocacy of abortion.
But it's something that could go either way.
Fortunately, I believe that his vote is un-needed.
Alito will be confirmed without it.
"Spectre would not vote for anyone if he knows they are against Roe. No one."
Goodbye, chairmanship then. Whatever spins his beanie.
Spectre would do anything to protect Roe. No doubt about it. The chairmanship is just a tool for him to do that.
