MSNBC's Chris Matthews: "[I]'m Sitting Here Holding In My Hands, A Pretty Disgusting Document, This Is Put Out Not For Attribution. But It Comes From The Democrats, They're Circulating It. I Can Say That." (MSNBC's "MSNBC Live," 10/31/05)
- Matthews: "[T]hen Their Complaint Sheet Against Judge Alito's Nomination. The First Thing They Nail About This Italian American Is He Failed To Win A Mob Conviction In A Trial 20 Years Ago, Or Something Way Back In '88." (MSNBC's "MSNBC Live," 10/31/05)
- Matthews: "In Other Words, They Nail Him On Not Putting Some Italian Mobsters In Jail From The [Lucchese] Family. Why Would They Bring Up This Ethnically Charged Issue As The First Item They Raise Against Judge Alito?" (MSNBC's "MSNBC Live," 10/31/05)
- Matthews: "This Is Either A Very Bad Coincidence Or Very Bad Politics. Either Way Its Gonna Hurt Them. This Document: Not Abortion Rights, Not Civil Rights But That He Failed To Nail Some Mobsters In 1988. This Is The Top Of Their List Of What They've Got Against This Guy. Amazingly Bad Politics." (MSNBC's "MSNBC Live," 10/31/05)
Matthews: "[The Democrats Are] Trying Not To Put A Signature On It, But I Just Did." (MSNBC's "MSNBC Live," 10/31/05)

I understand that, but Matthews' father is a conservative Republican...as is the rest of his family. A better target would have been smarter.

Interesting. There are some things that just tick Matthews off regardless of party politics. And once he's on a rant, he just keeps hammering it.
He'll be droning this for weeks. Of course, his point is completely legitimate and newsworthy. His solid Dem record gives the accusation greater credibility.

WoW!! I'm stunned. I was expecting this to be satire. LOL

I can't think of anyone who matched the passion with which Matthews went after Bill Clinton in 1998. Clinton deserved every bit of it and Chris Matthews was unrelenting. He also let it be known that he voted for Clinton, not once but twice. Other than lambasting Clinton at the time, he strikes me as more liberal than conservative.
His criticism of the Dems for how they chose to begin their attack on Judge Alito is open to interpretation.
One, they have no valid reason at the moment to criticize him or secondly, he has no problem with going after Alito but thinks they made themselves look bad by choosing such a lame argument.
I'll go with the second choice, for now.

I'm not at all surprised if Matthews voted for Bush in 2000. Throughout '98 he laid Clinton out with no mercy, and I agreed with him. Why did he think it was incumbent upon him to tell his viewers that he voted for Bill Clinton twice? He mentioned this several times.
At that time, it could have been a confession...an admission that he was wrong. He may have decided that he wasn't going to make that mistake again.

This is a great judge in the mold of a great American of Italian heritage, Antonin Scalia.
Democrats are not at all smart to stir up this kind of hornet's nest.

When can they vote in Hillary Rodham for their senator again? Oh, that's right! She has more important fish to fry.

"It's kinda hard to figure Matthews. He's a rabid Dem, who routinely hits the GOP below the belt. Why does he have a problem with it this time?"
He is only against it because he knows it will backfire on the dims. It is bad POLITICS ! If the character assasination would have worked it wouldn't have bothered him a bit.
It's Ok to demonize and destroy a man's character if it is good politics and the media follows suit.
On this mafia charge the dim wacko crowd figured the media would cheer them on, because the left can say anything.
I am really getting ticked off. I, as a conservative, do not have the same fundamental rights of speech (I've been P'C'd )as a flame throwing liberal. Can we claim some kind of class action suit since our free speech rights are being curtailed by the P.C. mob, while the leftist elitists can shout any foul mouthed verbiage they care to utter ?
To: AlbionGirl
Why do you think the Dems singled out Judge Alito's loss of a case against the mafia? Was it because he was not skillful enough to win the case? Are they accusing him of a "conflict of interests"...he is of Italian descent just as they are?
The Italian mafia is no secret to anyone I know. And that Alito didn't win this case has nothing to do, IMO, with him being of Italian descent. I've known plenty of Italian people and never suspect they belong to the mob. My grandparents came from Germany and our family has no claim to being German Nazis.
While we may privately take some kind of pride in our ancestry, we owe our allegiance to this country. Why take some special pride in an important appointment because... Hey, he and I have similar backgrounds! It smacks of a kind of separatism to me.

All I know is...over at DUmmies they are in abject panic over Alito's nomination. I don't know if they are "real" DU'ers or not...LOL! Hard to tell but it appears that they are losing confidence in their own elected swine. Many of them are giving up, some have pronounced Alito's confirmation in spite of a filibuster.
They sound dejected and I LOVE IT! LOL.
