... when the Dem's threaten to filibuster the Alito nomination they are going to point out that a lot of conservatives worked very hard to pressure Bush to deny her an up or down vote by withdrawing the nomination and will use this to support their refusal to let Alito have an up or down vote.

That's because they are intellectually dishonest.

And the points that refute the stand that even YOU were taking are summarized in the paragraph I quoted. A political party, from its leader to its rank and file, may offer and withdraw a nomination "at will."

Even if a nomination is confirmed, the President has the option and the power to not appoint.

Well, I'm an "evangelical? Christian, and so long as Mr. Alito is a strict constructionist Judge and is conservative, I could care less if he's Catholic or Protestant.

As am I; Christianity, IMHO, can "mean nothing" to advance the conservative cause or moral values, depending upon the person who claims to be a Christian (think political leaders: Carter and Clinton; think religious leaders: Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggert).....and God can and does use non-Christians/non-Evangelicals to do His bidding/will....we have seen this historically in our nation.

Absent open borders the libertarian philosophy falls apart. The LP platform is pro choice. Most libertarians are subscribers to complete "separation of church and state".

Perhaps a new party is in order for those libertarians with a nationalist bent who don't agree that killing unborn babies is simply a choice.

I've never been able to figure out why so many conservatives are frightened about a battle over the judiciary. We win almost every referendum on these volatile social issues. The public is with us, often by huge margins, on almost every issue that would be raised in a confirmation fight. That's the reason the Democrats are so desperate to maintain a leftist majority on the court. They know that leaving these issues to the voters means rejection of their agenda.

The irony is, if we keep up this trend, of having more and more Christians on the SCOTUS, it will soon reflect what the SC was like the first 100 years of our great nation, where ALL Justices were Christians, and being a believer was an asset to faithfully enforcing and upholding the Constitution and the founding Christian principles of the United States. John Jay had some great words on that topic, God bless him.
