PARIS (Reuters) - Actor Gerard Depardieu is ending his film career, a newspaper quoted the popular Frenchman as saying on Sunday.
"I have nothing to lose. I have made 170 films. I have nothing left to prove. I am not going to hang on like an idiot," Depardieu, one of France's best known actors at home and abroad, was quoted as saying by Le Parisien Dimanche newspaper.
"I'm in the process of stopping filming," said the portly star of films such as "Cyrano de Bergerac," "Green Card" and "Jean de Florette."
Depardieu, 56, made the comments on the set of the upcoming French film "Michou d'Auber." He would also star in an Asterix film to be made next year, the paper said.

I bet all his fans at FR are heart-broken. :-]
one of the only French actors I could stand... after 170 films good for him.
He is France best actor ever.
Never heard of the frog.
An a-s ugly guy who put in some great performances. Even in a minor role in Jeanne de Florette or in the otherwise awful 1900, Depardieu was a talented man.
Oh, I don't know about that. Maybe 20 to 30 lbs.
go back to sleep
I enjoyed him in "Man in the Iron Mask" and "My Father, the Hero". A very good actor.
I once saw him in a shop at Orly airport. He was wearing the same long coat that he has worn in a number of his films. I said hello. So did he.
I really cannot believe we are related sometimes...
This guy is the best actor what am. He could play any part, comedy or drama, and make you believe. I can't think of a single English language actor who is his equal. Probably because, our actors have to be, first, pretty boys, and actual acting is sometimes not required.
If he makes no more movies, at least those of us who have seen his movies will never have to see him in a movie when he is old. And that's a good thing.
In my opinion, he really did not have to make another film after "Jean de Florette"---he was so good in that...much better reading the subtitles of his films than trying to listen to him when he spoke English...I'll miss him, though I suspect he will come back to acting...most actors cannot give it up completely due to their egos and need for attention...in my humble uninformed opinion.
Come to think of it, the only film I really liked him in was that one called "The Return of Martin Guere" (or however it was spelled). One of those neat films that gets remade several times poorly. His Cyrano was alright unless you've seen Jose F's version. It seems like some movie stars get too successful, people get tired of them as they pick every cheezy but lucrative (overhyped) film around, and eventually they just burn out (while laughing all the way to the bank of course). The American films he made sure did suck.
He is a great actor.
Read his bio - he is very pro-american. He lived in a small town with a big American base and hung out with americans as a kid.
Man in the Iron Mask is an excellent film, I'd recommend renting the DVD. It only got made because of Leo DiCaprio's rising celebrity after Titanic, but it's filled with many superb character actors, and Gerard Depardieu was surprisingly amusing in it.
I saw the first one. It was terrible.
I hated The Return of Martin Guerre. It drove me nuts--yes he's Martin, no he isn't, yes he is, no he isn't--this drivel went on for two bleeping hours. One viewing is all I could stand.
Knowing when and how to quit are rare instincts. Good for him.
