The Fall 2005 Jack Maddox Distinguished Lecture Series, hosted by College of the Southwest, will present Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North, on Thursday, November 10. North will take the stage at Tydings Auditorium on the Hobbs High School campus at 7:30 p.m.
North is a combat decorated Marine, a #1 best-selling author, the founder of a small business, an inventor with three U.S. patents, a syndicated columnist, and host of "War Stories" on Fox News Channel; yet he claims his most important accomplishment as being "the husband of one and the father of four."
North was born in San Antonio, Texas, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and served 22 years as a U.S. Marine. His awards for service in combat include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor, and two Purple Hearts for wounds in combat.
Assigned to the national security council staff in the Reagan administration, North was the Unites States Government's Counter-Terrorism Coordinator from 1983-1986, was involved in planning the rescue of 804 medical students on the island of Grenada, and played a major role in the daring capture of the hijackers of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. After helping plan the U.S. raid on Muammar Qaddafi's terrorist bases in Libya, North was targeted for assassination by Abu Nidal, the infamous terrorist found dead in Baghdad in August, 2002. His award-winning combat coverage, while embedded with U.S. Marine and Army units for Fox News during Operation Iraqi Freedom, won international acclaim.
He is the author of Under Fire, One More Mission, War Stories-Operation Iraqi Freedom; and three novels: Mission Compromised, The Jericho Sanction (both New York Times best-sellers) and the recently published The Assassins.
North is also the founder of Freedom Alliance, a foundation which provides scholarships for the sons and daughters of service members killed in action.
Admission to the November 10 presentation is free; however, tickets are required. Tickets may be obtained by e-mailing tickets@csw.edu or by calling College of the Southwest at (505) 392-6565, extension 1014.
ping
Wow!!!!! I have to remember that one...it's only about 50 miles from my house. Thanks, LE for the ping. Gotta tell hubby about that so he'll take me!
It would be neat if y'all could go!
It sure would. I just figured out that hubby can't because he teaches a class on Thursday night....but if I had someone to go with I would go in a heartbeat! Star saw him in St. Louis and said he was awesome!
Tony, you need to see if you can join Ollie on this trip. That would be the icing on the cake! :o)...and Hobbs is PART of the Permian Basin!
I think Dubya made a late campaign stop in Hobbs last year.. it's a military town?
And is Hobbs part of the same Permian Basin that Odessa is part of? Just guessing here.
Yes, W stopped there...can't remember why. Lots of supporters there I would imagine.
No, it's not a military town. It was actually a dying oil field town until they recently got a casino and a race track. Now they're booming.
It is the same Permian Basin that Odessa is in. Hobbs is about 50 miles northwest of us. Just across the NM border. Keep your fingers crossed that I get to go!
How are you doing.....have missed you this weekend!
Friday's Veteran's day; lots of places will be closed (unless it's a Monday holiday). Casino and horse racing though, Friday through Monday. With oil prices high, the town is going through a boom cycle with the casino just icing.
If anyone needs directions to the Hobbs High School, let me know and I'll post them here.
Hey! You're from Hobbs! Hi, neighbor! I'm glad Hobbs finally got something going that would bring that nice little town back to life! I'm gonna try my best to get there for that....I love Ollie! Yeah, go ahead and post the directions. I've never been there without hubby, who lived there for about a year when he was still in school...years ago! Thanks!
High school here:
The above images may be time sensitive and expire giving everyone the big red X. If so, I'll work on getting a map up that will stay put.
If coming from Seminole on US 62-180, turn right one street past the traffic light at Sanger and Marland. Pass the football stadium on the right and park on the west side of the stadium. The auditorium entrance is on the west side of the parking lot.
If coming from Andrews on NM 18, pass Marland, Broadway, Snyder and turn right on Clinton. Go to the stop sign (Jefferson) and turn left. The High School is one block on your right. Park in the parking lot (which is the back of the auditorium) or turn right and park in the lot between the auditorium and the football stadium.
If you're interested in going to the casio/racetrack instead, follow the big blue and yellow signs; they're mounted all over town!
Thanks, CD! That's a big help. I've already bookmarked this thread so I'll have the ticket information...and now the directions! Just keeping my fingers crossed that I get to make it!
Thanks! Maybe it will...but if not, I know where to find it! LOL!
AAAUUUGGGG!!!! Well, that just rips it! However, I am not surprised. Guess I'd better get on calling those other towns. Of course, they are closed for the evening by now. WAAAAAA! Thanks for the info!
No, just past 4 p.m. here.
*slapping forehead* Of course! I forgot about the time change between here and there! Gotta try to get on it!
