Outside Walter Reed on Friday Nights, Two Camps Stand Their Ground
Every Friday night, Gael Murphy and Kristinn Taylor meet in Northwest Washington, separated by a bustling four-lane road -- and a whole lot more.
Since spring, the two have stood firmly on opposite sides of Georgia Avenue NW in front of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Murphy leading a coalition of war protesters, Taylor marshaling supporters of the Iraq war.
Both sides say they are there to support the troops. Beyond that, there's little common ground.
"They start yelling, 'Murderer!' 'Traitor!' They call me by name," said Murphy, a co-founder of the women's antiwar group Code Pink. "It's aimed at disrupting our vigil."
To Taylor, a spokesman for the local chapter of FreeRepublic.com, a politically conservative Web site, disruption is an honorable goal.
"It's galling for us to see them across the street," he said. "They've endorsed the terrorists."
The Friday night gatherings near the District's northern tip, about six miles north of the White House, have become one of the most visible reminders in Washington of a war that has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 U.S. troops. That they are being staged outside a military hospital that treats the war's wounded makes the standoffs all the more pointed -- and controversial.
The war supporters, many of them known as "Freepers" because of their devotion to FreeRepublic.com, insist it is unpatriotic and demoralizing to protest the war in clear view of wounded soldiers. They started congregating along Georgia Avenue on Fridays after learning that the protesters were out there delivering a "despicable" message.

Since when do a bunch of Soros-funded citizens without State Department credentials get to go to a foriegn leader and start negotiating? Why aren't these audacious, arrogant One-World dictator-lovers in jail?
No, the Post came out to do photos/research on September 30:

As I told everyone within shouting distance on Friday night, the only Guard (they have a sign that says they support the guard) that the Code Pinkos support is the remnants of Saddam's Republican Guard. The only troops they support are the terrorist insurgent troops who are killing and wounding our brave soldiers.
The quotes may have been equal but the quotes from FreeRepublic as "eating pizza" and "loads of fun" about the counter protests were put in there to minimize the group. Also, the "mocking" comment.
Obviously I have a jaded view of the Post, however this article has a couple punches at FR.
Doesn't minimize the great job you did with the reporter and overall - Kudos again on a job well done.
bttt
That's right! Code Pink IS nothing like us, here at Free Republic. We stand for truth, honor, decency and One Nation Under God. We love, respect and commend our troops. We support them with gratitude and awe for their bravery, patriotism and sense of duty to this great nation ohf ours. We understand that we did not ask for this was, we did not want this war but we had (and have) no choice but to fight it as it was brought upon us by evil people looking to destroy us as a people and as a nation.
We "get it" that if we did not fight this fight over there, it very well may be fought over here. We will not allow that to happen and therefore we support the war. That is not to say we "like" it - of course we do not, but we understand that it is needed and must be won. We cannot back down now otherwise we will eventually pay with our lives and with our freedom.
God Bless you Kristinn and everyone else who attends the couterprotests over at Walter Reed. You are doing the right thing and I applaude you! : )
What despicable scum modern day "Journalists" are.
I loathe the media! They come, they manipulate, they print.
Since jFkerry successfully managed to do it and get away with it.
Next question? ;*)
It doesn't matter, though. As \/\/ayne pointed out in post #10, and marktwain in #36, this will bring more people to FreeRepublic, because they want to find out more.
This is an ideological war that we must fight and must win. Walter Reed is a battle in this war that the pinkos cannot win, because FReepers have chosen to engage them where we have the "high ground". Any publicity, no matter how slanted, only reveals them as dense, callous, and dis-compassionate.
Gael Murphy is a hypocrite, a liar or a psycho, perhaps all three. It was all fun and glee when Code Pinko disrupted the Boston and NYC political conventions, Bolton's nomination and Rumsfeld's testimony.
And of course, the Washington Post has NO clue, or decides to ignore it. Either way, it's another self-indictment of Washington Post by the Washington Post.
Hey Al, here's a walk down memory lane...
And Mr Washington Post Staff Writer, that's just some of "The Murph" and doesn't count her friends and lovers.
Ah, the things that can happen when one doesn't think before she speaks...
What? No mention of "Maimed for a Lie" or "Enlist and Die for Haliburton?"
Well put, Gadsdenman. Good analysis.
How's your quota of mittens and hats?..Cold medicine? You guys take care and bundle up ok..will ya?
Kristinn, fine job!! Salute!
BTW, the POS who punched me finally plead guilty last week.
No, this report was from the 7 October Freep.

As a Foot Soldier in the DC Chapter, I came prepared this past Friday evening. Layered Flannel and T-Shirt under a Gore-Tex Hooded Jacket.
Even loaned my Thin-Sulate gloves to one FReeper's little girl before going over to Mologne House to drop off books, robes, DVDs and other things for the recovering soldiers.
Someone wisely hit a Dunkin' Donuts and brought two Jugs o' Joe and one Jug of Hot Cocoa to go along with the traditionally ordered pizza, Earthdweller.
FReepers are usually big on Creature Comforts. Bringing food, drinks, lawn and camp chairs. Unlike the opposition, who more often than not show up once; and do not bother to return.
Jack.
Albion is correct, it was the 30 September Freep..It rained on the 7 October Freep..or was that just high humidity?
